JuliaFaith Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 Not sure what to do now. My son has been in treatment for a cough he acquired a week ago and is on 500mg 2xday of Biaxen and his PANDAS symptoms are worse than they have ever been. He has high anxiety, sleep problems, trouble swallowing, shaky feeling, As of yesterday, he now has a migraine (he has only had 1 before). Have read some threads on here that talk about Babesia and Spirochette as possibilities for this reaction. DS was not on abx before this but had continuing headache, muscle ache, stomache ache symptoms of which his Dr. has been trying to problem-solve. She has us going to a Rheumatologist next. Wondering if it could be Lyme? Any ideas?
KeithandElizabeth Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 Hello: Getting worse initially on antibiotics can definitely be a herxheimer reaction: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herxheimer_reaction I would recommend doing the IGENEX lyme and coinfections tests as well as checking for mycoplasma. Keep us updated. Elizabeth

I would see a lyme specialist before I would see a rheumatologist because there seems to be a clear connection to the antibiotics which suggests it is a die off reaction, also called a herx. The rheumatologist won't know anything about this.
Healingthedude Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 FYI...I was told by our immunologist that if you are doing IVIG you have to wait a full 3 months after treatment to get an accurate Lyme test. If you are not doing IVIG, I agree with everyone else on the testing.
JuliaFaith Posted October 6, 2010 Author Report Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) Thank you for your insight. We have the igenx testing box here but have to wait 1 week after finishing current abx before we can do the test. Did find some local lyme dr. on the lyme forum thank goodness. Do you usually stop taking the abx when the herzing starts or continue? He is taking 500 mg of Biaxen 2xday. Really appreciate your input! Edited October 6, 2010 by JuliaFaith
pamsboy Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Hi, I did call Igenex and the doctor there said 7-10 days is all you have to wait to get accurate results. We did a PCR about a month after IVIG and it came out positive. Still waiting for Western Blot. Do you think the IVIG could cause a false positive for PCR? As in DNA particles in the IVIG? That would seem difficult to imagine (or at least for me to want to imagine!).

Best wishes.
