  1. My daughters breath odor does not smell like strep. I suspect possible yeast due to antibiotics a couple of weeks ago. Any suggestions on what to gargle with? I have been making my dd gargle with scope before school. I sure don't want her known as the girl with the poop breath. It does appear to help, but usually comes back within a few hours. She won't use Listerine, it burns her mouth. I may do a home strep test when she gets home to to rule out strep, but I haven't noticed any odd behaviors, as a matter of fact she has been in a great mood. Sorry to hijack this thread, but I was going to ask this same question. This is not the first time my daughter has had this same breath smell. I would love to figure out what is causing it. My dd has great oral hygiene, never had a cavity and goes to the dentist every 6 months for cleaning. She doesn't snore, not stuffy, no allergies at the moment. This has me baffled. I forgot to mention that she has complained of acid reflux, which is very uncommon for her. The only other time she complained of acid coming up in her throat was during her 1 and only exacerbation with strep in 2010.
  2. My dd8 gets a sinus infection within 3 weeks of going off antibiotics. From what I have read, a lot of sinus infections are caused by fungus and not bacteria, so maybe the antibiotics caused the fungal overgrowth. My daughter never flares with these sinus infections, but her breath becomes horrid! My daughter was on antibiotics a few weeks ago and her breath is starting to get that smell, but she is showing no sinus symptoms. I am going to try some grape seed extract or OLE and see if that helps. Peg, "poop" is a pretty accurate way to describe this smell, lol.
  3. I swab my daughter 2 or 3 times just to make sure i got a good swab. There is a you-tube video on how to swab. Circular motion to make sure you get the whole area. I have been using these for a year and a half and they work great. My daughter doesn't get sore throats either, so if she is acting off or in a bad mood for no apparent reason, I always swab just to make sure! They are cheap enough to waste. Better safe than sorry in my opinion. I don't ever wanna live through another exacerbation again!!!!!
  4. I live the Southern Indiana, about 20 minutes from Louisville,KY. My dd7 had 1 exacerbation in September of 2010. We caught it quickly and is doing great almost 2 years later! PM me if you get a chance.
  5. Here is another link that I found interesting about the effects of OLE. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21183324 Sorry again, I don't know how to the post the direct link. I only know how to copy and paste, LOL.
  6. www.seagateproducts.com/ss-images/townsend-letter-may.pdf (sorry computer illiterate) Not sure how to post the direct link. I did a lot of research on Olive Leaf 15 months ago, while trying to decide which OLE to buy. I decided on the Seagate brand after reading the book by Morton Walker and after reading great reviews. We had great results with this brand. Over the next several months, I switched to a few less expensive brands that had much higher Olepurin (spelling) that were a lot less effective. I have since went back to using the Seagate brand of Ole and find it the most effective. My husband has Ankylosing Spondylitis Arthritis and the Seagate brand is the only brand that caused him to herx. We have to start off with a very low dose and build up over a course of a month or so.
  7. What's "high dose" OLE? We give twice daily and credit it with keeping our whole family pretty healthy overall, but if "high dose" would help nail fresh germ or virus, by any chance, I'm up for trying it. Thanks in advance! I give it twice daily for prophylaxis, but if my daughter starts to get a stuffy nose or something, I give 2 capsules 3 x a day and within 12 to 24 hours she is always good as new! Last week, when my daughter tested positive on the home strep test, I decided to try the high dose Olive Leaf instead of antibiotics and it seemed to pull her right out of it. Sensory and low level anxiety vanished, and she is now testing negative on the rapid. I will continue with the high dosage and retest again in a week or so. I'll admit, I was really nervous about not placing her on a regular antibiotic, but EVERYTIME she is placed on antibiotics, she gets a horrible sinus infection 3 weeks later, only to be placed back on antibiotics, and within 3 weeks she is sick again. I have had much better luck with the Olive Leaf Extract. It seems to strengthen her immune system, whereas regular antibiotics always seem to weaken it! I am NOT recommending that everyone ditch their antibiotics for OLE, but for those who are fighting to get antibiotics, I swear OLE is the next best thing!
  8. Hey Kim, I just wanted to say that I highly recommend the Olive Leaf Extract. It has been our Saving Grace! We have been using it for 15 months as a prophylactic. Last week, my dd7 started complaining about her clothing, socks were feeling funny, tags bothering her again. She was starting to show signs of low level anxiety. I swabbed her throat and sure enough it was a faint positive. I decided to double her dose of OLE and within a day, symptoms were gone. I swabbed her again today and it was negative. I am going to continue with high dose Olive Leaf for another week or so and then swab her again. I am not exactly sure why it works so well, but for whatever reason, it works great in our family. I just ordered my 2nd box of Rapid Strep test and highly recommend those as well. Good Luck,
  9. I have been using Nutiva Organic extra virgin coconut oil for several months. I use it on our toast, bagels, pancakes, etc. instead of butter. It taste great! I had used some of the store bought brands and the flavor was very bland. Not all coconut oil is created equal. I cook with in when I can. The taste is pretty strong, so you can only use it in recipes that compliment it. I added it to vegi soup and that was pretty gross, lol. I never made that mistake again. But it is awesome in most bake goods and it makes your house smell so good. I have also been using it on my dry skin and it is the better than any lotion that I have ever used. It has even faded my suns spots (tinea versicolor). It is also a great alternative to chap stick and taste amazing. If your looking for a good quality coconut oil, I highly recommend Nutiva. It cost a little more than the brand walmart sells, but there is no comparision in quality and taste.
  10. These also come in very handy! My SIL/Ped is a 45 minute drive away. She trust this particular brand, so she has no problem calling me in antibiotics when I get a Positive swab. They are also great for checking to see if a current infection has cleared. I usually test a couple of days after finishing antibiotics and then again a week or so later to make sure its completely gone.
  11. I have had great success with these. My box had an 18 month shelf life. Strep Tests 25/bx $28.95 - Price Any Time For One Box www.docsavings.com/ These appear to be very accurate. I have used them on several family members and have gotten Positive swabs! Just make sure you get a really good swab. I gag everyone several times!
  12. I am no expert by any means, but my whole family has been dealing with Candida (yeast) for a while now. I have been doing a lot of research on this topic for the past month. From what I have read, Candida can cause everyone of the symptoms listed under this topic. Candida can cause many different rashes, blisters, cradle cap, anal rashes, even the elbow rash mentioned above. It is definitely worth checking into.
  13. We have been using Swanson brand OLE for about a year now. It is 20% oleurpein. Our Ped refuses to give us prophylactic antibiotics, so I opted for a natural one. I have been extremely happy with Ole. My dd7 had strep throat a few months back without exacerbation. I am not sure that it was the Olive Leaf, but I am not willing to take her off of it to find out.
  14. Could this possibly be Post-Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis? Anyone have any experience with this? I have read that some Pandas kids have had this complication with strep. With his new surge of Pandas symptoms, I would definitely have this ruled out. Symptoms are rust colored urine, blood in urine, and decreased urine out put.
  15. In my daughters case, the seizures started within 4 hours of the dtap, followed by the neck jerking tic that lasted for another 14 days. I have refused any more dtaps. My doctor wants to give a Tetanus booster later on this year. I haven't decided on that yet.
  16. Wow Colleen! My dd7, presented with 3 to 5 second seizures and neck jerking tic at the age of 6 months immediately following her dtap vaccine. Her doctor referred to these movements as tourettes like, and chorea movements. We had an EEG done and thankfully everything came back normal. This episode lasted 14 days and abruptly stopped. Fast forward 3 years and she developed crazy frequent urination, which was found to be asymptomatic strep. One course of antibiotics took care of that. Fast forward 2 more years, she presented with the same crazy urination, only this time developed OCD and anxiety. 2 courses of antibiotics and she was back to 100%. Fast forward another year, she came home with sore throat that tested positive for strep, only this time, no Pandas symptoms at all. Let us know how her EEG turns out. Sending prayers your way.
  17. I am anxious to hear what Dr. Drew has to say about this tonight on MSNBC. Hopefully, he will be more open minded!
  18. Well, I am definitely not the youngest, smartest or wealthiest, but.. I do have a 21 year old genius son, who is taking his MCATS in January. He has seen first hand what Strep did to his 5 year old little sister. He is definitely a PANDAS believer. I have mentioned several times for him to pick a specialty that treats PANDAS and he would have more patient's than he could handle. He is definitely interested! I might add, that this is the son, who had transient tics and anxiety as a child.
  19. Mary, Thanks so much for keeping me in reality, lol. I promise to NEVER forget PANDAS. I have forever been scarred. Those 2 months although were milder than most, were very terrifying. My daughter never raged or had what they call the exorcist type symptoms, but to me, watching her fear life was horrible. I will continue to read the forums and keep up with everyones children. I will continue to pray for all of the kids that are still suffering. As for not worrying, it is too late, I have read so many stories, they will always be ingrained in my mind. Unfortunately PANDAS has become my OCD.
  20. Thanks Vickie. I am not wanting to sound like an OLE salesman, but my whole family have been impressed with its effects. My daughter was sick every 3 weeks last winter. I started the OLE in March and she went 7 months without as much as a sniffle. She didn't have her usual spring and fall allergies this year either. I can't say for sure that it has been the OLE, but something is working.
  21. hailey -- first, i am so happy to hear of your daughter's health and wish continued NO symptoms for her! i must also say, that i agree with LLM. what you describe seems quite classic infection-based to me. it may be that she and you are simply 'lucky' that you caught it early and haven't had continued troubles. as for your question of autoimmune vs infection, i think it simply lies in that there is not enough research on the chronic state itself so there is also not enough research of an acute variant. my advice to you would be to remain aware of current thinking and practices concerning pandas. certainly not to the point of being paranoid and worried or even researching and thinking like those of us dealing daily with things; but to the point that you are confident you have a good plan or two in place for 'what if. . . ". hopefully, for her, it may have been a one-time pandas episode without reccurence, but if not, you'll be on your toes for what to do. interesting that you post this now. . . i just saw an old friend of mine that was aware ds has had some troubles and related to strep infection but not so much many details. as i was going into more details, she recalls her daughter had an odd experience with strep many years ago. she didn't think she was sick but she had mild to moderate emotional troubles. a week or so later, there was something about her throat -- still mild. 2-3 weeks later, my friend took her to the doctor b/c she was driving her crazy with upsets. i believe positive culture, am sure they put her abx. a few days later, child totally back to normal. my friend says she remembers the day behaviors started. sounds to me like classic pandas. girl has never had trouble again. when i asked about strep infections, my friend couldn't remember if she'd had one or not but definitely didn't have the issues. for my friend, it's one of those catalogued wierd things -- the entire reason she took her to dr, was emotional trouble; it was not that she was sick and just feeling off b/c of being sick. i don't think there was any discussion of pandas or infection-based behaviors -- the girl was 'off' so in a routine check of general health, they thought her throat could be strep. i wonder how many of similar cases there are, that get resolved and are never diagnosed. dr b was recently quoted as saying, 'it's not a rare disorder, just rarely diagnosed.' perhaps there is an acute form and a chronic form. we have seemed to have lost teeth without big issues. but, there are many here that believe there is a definite correlation between teeth issues and exacerbation. i wish you continued health!!! Smarty, thanks so much for your reply. I assure you that I will vigilant. I have been forever changed by the 2 month episode we experienced last fall. I am already beyond paranoid and will most likely continue to swab a bad mood, (yes..I have been known to do that). I will never take a sore throat, tummy ache or any ache for granted. I am happy to hear that your friends daughter never had any other strep related problems. I just wish there were more similar success stories to read. I also have to agree with Dr. B. I believe that Pandas is under diagnosed. My neighbors daughter has had selective mustim for years. She had her tonsils removed this past summer for recurrent strep infections. She is now speaking. It definitely raised my eyebrow.
  22. Awe...This post brought tears to my eyes. I was just fortunate enough to find this forum in a time of desperation. If it wouldn't have been for the passionate parents on this forum, insisting that I get my daughter swabbed immediately, we most likely be in a much darker place today. I am so very grateful!!! Keep doing what your doing. I promise, you are making a difference in so many families lives.
  23. Thank You for the well well wishes. I am happy to hear your daughter is also doing well. I would love to hear your story, pm me and we can compare notes. In my daughters case, she clearly had a classic Pandas exacerbation of symptoms with an asymptomatic case of Strep. It is my understanding that PANDAS is an autoimmune disorder, that children exacerbate due to the antibodies and not the strep itself. This is where I find it so confusing. In my daughters case, her symptoms clearly went away with the Strep infection. I have been searching the forum for similar stories and yet to find any cases where a Pandas child went on to have another strep infection without exacerbation. I am absolutely thrilled to have survived this round of strep, but at the same time it has left me with so many unanswered questions.
