Do they know if the bronchitis was caused by Mycoplasma? But, then, that wouldn't explain the rash and possible rheumatic fever. Would you be up for taking her to urgent care over the weekend and getting someone else to swab her? That way you can stay in "good graces" with your ped if you like him and tell him that the rash got worse and you didn't want to wait until Monday. That way it doesn't seem like you're going over his head.

Welcome. I wanted to pass on some useful threads for you to read through. They may answer some questions you have or lead to new ones. PANDAS Fact Sheet http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6265 PANDAS FAQ http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6266 Also, here is a thread about OCD in children as seen by parents on this forum. Besides his bathroom rituals, getting fixed on things. etc, he very well might have had more OCD than you thought. A lot of parents, in the beginning, don't quite recognize the things their child is doing as OCD. Signs of OCD in a young child http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...ic=6153&hl= With PANDAS there are a variety of symptoms that may surface. There is a list in the PANDAS Fact Sheet I posted above. A child does not need to have all symptoms to get a diagnosis of PANDAS. I don't know if you've read through those links before, but if you go down the list of symptoms, your son does exhibit some. Then double that with the history of rheumatic fever in the family tree and it leads me to think it's wise to think about a second opinion. Out of curiosity has he had a strep test that tested negative since his last + in July 09?

Thank you for posting an update. Good hear things are going well. I wish her and your whole family continued health and happiness.

Docs in NH, ME, MA or VT that Do IVIG?

The closest I know of is Dr Bouboulis in CT. -
I do wonder how far they go to determine there is no "recent strep infection". It seems a lot of doctors stop at strep throat. Everyone needs to remember that PANDAS is caused by strep, in general...not only strep throat! You then can bring PITAND into this and maybe there was a different infection, such as Mycoplasma P involved. Second, in Swedo's paper on the first 50 cases, she stated that in subsequent episodes an exacerbation can be triggered by even viruses. I don't have the whole quote right now but she does state... "...Thus, the lack of evidence... for a preceding strep infection in a particular episode does not preclude the diagnosis of PANDAS" At least it does state in a brief blurb, "However, some version of PANDAS likely does exist. " Overall, I don't know why, but I can't quite figure out what they are trying to say in here. Are they saying that it is stress causing these symptoms and not PANDAS or are they saying that stress is a trigger in PANDAS?

For those who were seen by Dr. Latimer....
thereishope replied to fiveam's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I have not seen Dr Latimer so I can't give an opinion on that. But what I can say is if you think you'd eventually go down the therapy path, research that now. Some therapists (not all) will have a long waiting list. Originally, we went with one therapist that got us in fast, and I soon realized why she was able to get us in fast. She was horrible. Then I went to another one. I was first put on a waiting list then I eventually got an appointment. From the first call for an appt to the first actual appt, I waited maybe 4 or 5 months! And that was with us being considered an "emergency". Psychologists and therapist often have a limit on how many patients they have or how many new patients they can take. So, I would say call around now and find out ow it is around you. Also, speak to the thearpist, if you can, prior to appt to make sure they know what PANDAS is. I called around and found over numerous therapists that didn't know what PANDAS was. One even admitted to googling it while I was on the phone with them. -
Need help understanding OCD
thereishope replied to monarchcat's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I think with PANDAS, for me, it gets to the point that I don't take each symptom and pick a catagory for it to fall in. A lot of times you can't know everything your child is thinking to be able to catagorize it. A lot of different actions or behaviors can fall under different umbrellas. As for whether behavior fall more into an Aspergers trait vs OCD, again, I wouldn't get hung up on it. A good number of parents on this forum have been told their child showed autistic qualities while in an exacerbation or needed to be screened. And this questioning came as a result of the behaviors surfacing during PANDAS. However once recovey from PANDAS occurs that question of autism or Aspergers the school or med person said is gone. -
My husband just came home with a sore throat
thereishope replied to parents4eyes's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
First, let's just hope it's a dry throat or a virus causing the sore throat! Go to the dr and get a rapid done. Rapid +....start antibiotics for him and go onto getting family members tested too. If rapid is negative, make sure they send another swab sample out to be cultured. You could ask that they give antibiotics while waiting for the culture result. It depends on the dr if they will do this. If culture comes back +...start antibiotics for him and go onto getting family members tested too. If culture comes back negative, move onto blood tests. If anyone in the house tests +, they need to go for a follow up strep test (following steps above) 3 weeks after finishing all antibiotics. Also, you think you don't get sick. You can have strep and not get symptoms. You would need to get tested too. -
As for tv, he feels if he asks you one more time you just might give in and the thought of that possibility being there drives him up the wall and he can't help but ask. I would think for most kids w/o OCD (depending on age of course) they would ask maybe 3 times then eventually drop it. They can come to grips with it. Have you seen this list of OCD in chidlren. It's compiled from experiences of people on the forum. Unfortunately, my son had a lot of OCD. http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...ic=6153&hl=

Need help understanding OCD
thereishope replied to monarchcat's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
1. the coat....with my son it was a struggle with every season as the change in attire occurred. we had to prep him and start on the weekend. His main thing during his last exacerbation was wearing a hat or hood. He HAD to wear a hat or hood. He could not be seen w/o one. That one we had to help him get over.It didn't go away on its own. 2. hair. Oh, boy did we have that. My son had a crew cut. There's no way it could be messed up. But he was CONVINCED it was. He'd have to stand there "flattening" his hair out since he said it was messed up. Then it got extreme to the ppint that he hit and slapped his head while fixing it. 3. we walked on eggshells all the time. You never knew what would set him off. We lived with Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde. For some reason he'd get mad at us and say "YOU'RE FIRED". and, no he did not watch the Apprentice. 4. Okay, I don't think we had that. Oh,wait, what he had is that everything HAD to be his way. He would find a way to combat what you had to say even if it was in his favor. He could not bring himself to follow your direction to a tee w/o altering it somehow. As for what catagory everything falls in, it depends. I can see OCD, sensory, ODD. My son did have sensory problems too, but all of the above I believe for my son was OCD and ODD. I was once told that ODD can result from OCD not being fulfilled or soemthing like that. -
I think one of the more bothersome things for me at was going to the store and in the toy aisle hearing "Mom, I like this toy. Mom, did you see? Look. Mom, what's the name of the toy (this as a way of quizzing me to make sure I was paying attention) A few minutes pass.... "Mom, do you still remember the toy I wanted. Are you gonna put it on my Christmas list?' Side note...Christmas would be like 6 months away when he'd ask me to put it on "his list". I always told my husband not to go to the toy aisle, but he'd just keep doing it. btw...in one shopping trip he'd do this for the upwards of 10+ toys....seriously.

It sounds like reassurance OCD. He either he wants you to answer the same question over and over, repeat things back in a very specific way, wants to ensure that you heard everything he had to say.....My son did that.

You can totally give advil/motrin to a 3 year old. I do it for my 3 year old.I looked on my bottle and for 38 pound it's 1 1/2 tsp. That's 150 mg. I give my kids dye free Motrin since they won't take pills. -

May I ask what ethnicity you DS3 is?In an old thread, it was surprising the high number of people that were Eastern Europe and I believe British decent. However, it has been said on here before that strain can have something to do with PANDAS surfacing as well in some kids. That the strain preys on the young. -
If you haven't checked family members for strep, I'd do that too (even if none of you have symptoms of strep). Since the rapid came back negative, did they culture her? If not, next time do a culture as well. I have had rapids come back negative, but then I get a call a couple of days later saying the culture was +. I'm happy your ped is working with you and prescribed abs even with a negative rapid. Ultimately, let the full picture (how the PANDAS symptoms are) be your guide if the antibiotics are helping. I don't think summer break is coming fast enough for any of us!

Welcome. Some PANDAS kids will have a PANDAS reaction to exposure only without actually being infected. People will refer to their child as a "canary". Also, it has been compared to a peanut allergy. With a severe peanut allergy, a child may have a reaction by having it just be airborne. So, no, you may not be imagining anything. Did your daughter start Augmentin XR based on the possible PANDAS dx or has she had strep recently?

They all have strep AGAIN!
thereishope replied to matis_mom's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Question...If you test + for strep and you are breatsfeeding, do you think it would be wise to pump and discard the milk until you get a negative test? I believe the antibodies your body will produce to eliminate strep will be passed on in the breastmilk. Do we assume the mother has "good antibodies" that won't adversly affect the baby with a PANDAS sibling or do you think there's a chance the mom's antibodies would possibly activate PANDAS in the baby with a PANDAS sibling? -

Oh my Gosh! I feel so bad for you. With our home, we had a "cluster" of infections. 3 infections in 6 months. Now, knock on wood, we have been strep free for a year. So, hopefully, once summer comes and school is out you will get a break and hopefully strep will not come back. -
