He wasn't holding his breath. He was tightening up all the muscles in his face and neck b/c he was thinking really hard. That's what he tells me! Anyway, he was making his face all red and that's when it happened. To answer a prior question: no, there is no history of epilepsy in our families, but there is no history of tics either. Again, it's all part of the mystery we're trying to solve.

Thanks Lyn for the input. I knew there was someone on here who had experience with it. Anyway, turns out the doc thinks it was an isolated incident b/c ds was trying to turn his face red when it happened. Don't ask, just something silly a 10 year old boy was doing. The doc did some basic tests in the office and told me that an EEG wasn't necessary b/c it was just one episode but that we could always do one just to be on the safe side. He referred me to a doctor who hangs in the naturopathic community who does neurological testing and EEG's. So, I'll probably call them tomorrow AM and find out about insurance and scheduling, etc. Honestly, the whole incident was surreal. I'm just hoping we can continue on with a natural approach for now. I am waiting for a call back from the naturopath. My son was just sitting on the computer acting like a typical 10 year old and being silly by tightening up his muscles and stuff and all of a sudden he shot his arms up in the air, fell over out of the chair, and hit his head on the floor. I was coming over to him as he was falling and I tried to pick him up by grabbing his wrists but he was out of it. Then 2 seconds later he 'comes to' and looks at me and says, "What am I doing on the floor?" It was very surreal. I am waiting for the naturopath first before I call a traditional doctor. Since it was a very short incident I am hoping to stay away from the emergency room and I'm hoping I can get the tests authorized by our naturopath. Does anyone have experience with seizures? What kind of tests will be required to get done? How do seizures fit in to the picture with tics, ADD, and anxiety? Thanks! Bonnie

For those of you curious about my stingray wound!
ilovedogs replied to ilovedogs's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hmmm, never thought of that Kim. I haven't been taking my cal mag b/c I knew it could interfere and I've just been doing vit C and some other immune boosters. I'll research the silver. I've only taken it twice so far anyway. Thanks! -

I put it on last night and wore it through the night. Took it off this AM. I'm going to redo it later once I soak my foot in sea salt again. Wound care sure does take a lot of time out of my day! -

Gosh,no! I totally forgot! I've been taking sovereign silver, vitamin C, garlic, and soaking in sea salt and tea tree oil. I'll have to try the honey! How long do you leave the compress on, Char? -
Ok, so this is still OT for our boards but so many of you have wished me well! I am currently on round 2 of antibiotics and the area around the wound is sore and swollen. Right now I'm just praying that I don't need a hospital stay for IV antibiotics!!!! I'd hate to be 'healthy' and be in the hospital. Talk about boring and risking getting other hospital born illnesses. So, my doc said to wait until Tuesday on the augmentin that I'm on and then we may have to do an MRI or CT scan to see what things look like below the surface. I may need surgery to debride the wound and clean out dead tissue if this round of antib. doesn't work. Again, that's the last thing I'd like to have happen! Also, a hospital stay would not be handled very well by my anxious ds so I'm praying that I heal up well in the next few days! Bonnie

Congratulations, Carolyn! My son was the same weight but a bit longer and it was quite a delivery. Enjoy that new bundle!

That's funny b/c the day after I got stung I started coming down with a mild cold and I took grapefruit seed extract(I found it at a natural food store in FL). I didn't continue taking it. Are you saying that I should take it orally or use it topically? Right now I have a charcoal poultice on the wound area to pull toxins or bacteria to the surface. Don't know if it works but it sure feels good b/c I soaked it in an epsom salts bath with some tea tree oil added in! Right now my naturopath just wants me to keep an eye on it. He had a patient a few weeks ago who had a stingray sting get infected and he had to cut out the infection, etc. But, she hadn't taken any antibiotics or been as careful as I have been!
-
So, do you use the ledum for now just in case? My naturopath told me that I already missed the window for getting the shot anyway and that I shouldn't bother getting the tetanus shot. He used to work for pharmaceutical companies as a chemist so I know he speaks truth when he says to steer clear of certain things. He did tell me to get on antibiotics, though, so he's not totally against orthodox meds. Bonnie
-
So, Kim, in other words ....you probably wouldn't give the tetanus booster! It's funny but I found a homeopathic website that stated that you should still follow orthodox medicine and give the tetanus boosters and follow their plan. Then they stated that hyperconium(st. john's wort) can be used against tetanus/lock jaw. I found it odd that a homeopathic doctor would encourage his readers to follow orthodox medicine. although, my naturopath thought it was a good thing that I went on an antibiotic to prevent infection. Turns out he had a patient who developed secondary infection after a stingray sting in Mexico and he had to cut out the pus and drain it, etc.
-
So, I turned down a tetanus booster when I got stung by the stingray. And, I spoke to 2 doctors who didn't seem to care and thought that my risk was negligible anyway. I've had a bad reaction to it before so I turned it down. I was wondering if any of you have turned it down for yourself or for your children? Since I have a puncture wound, it mildly concerns me but since the docs said there was low low risk I am trying to tell myself I made the right decision. I know that many vaccines have thimerosal and I didn't want that coursing through my body. But, what about those that turn down vaccines for their children for a lifetime? Would there ever be a case where they would break down and give the vaccine? Bonnie

A poll about the supplements your using for children?

Isn't it weird how the NAC helped you guys but Faith had issues with it recently? Crazy! -
Grif's therapist taught him to tighten up every muscle in his body and then slowly relax to calm his anxiety. And, we taught him deep breathing when he was 3 or 4. He still does it to this day! On the way to his tennis tournament 2 weeks ago I heard him breathing in the backseat. He just takes really deep breaths and then releases them slowly. I taught him to do a 4 count inhale and an 8 count exhale(or longer) and I told him to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. In yoga the breathing is all through the nose, both exhale and inhale, but he liked exhaling through the mouth and just felt better about it. I haven't had him use this for tics, though, just for anxiety. Bonnie

Thanks, Chemar! I didn't think of honey, either! I just wish I could walk on my foot better right now. It's really sore b/c the barb went in on the side of my foot right near the arch and it hit the bone. Those things go in deep! Bonnie

I was at the naturopath's office this AM b/c ds had a follow up visit and he inquired about my stingray sting. Apparently, he had a patient just 3 weeks ago come in with an infected stingray sting wound. The patient had not taken any prophylactic antibiotics and the wound had re-opened, etc. He told me to start using a charcoal poultice on my foot to help my wound heal. I did start antibiotics last week but I know the poultice couldn't hurt. For so long I have been taking charcoal for gas pain and stomach problems(it works wonders and I travel with it everywhere!) but I completely forgot that you can use it on the skin! So, I'll keep you all posted as to how the stingray sting is progressing and if I get a nice charcoal 'tattoo'! Here's a link to some charcoal information, the author describes the difference between adsorbtion and absorption and how charcoal works in the body. It really is amazing and I thought some of you might like to read it so you can use charcoal effectively in your home. http://www.natural-holistic-health.com/alt...vated-charcoal/ Have a great night! We have our son on phosphatidylserene, too. I know that Carolyn N has had her son on it for quite some time. I can't say that I've seen any plus or minus from the PS100 but I will keep giving it b/c it's supposed to be a HUGE help in brain function. It's too bad that it's quite expensive, though. B

I was thinking of asking the same thing, Faith. With my son, the reaction to aminos can go either way. I just never know until I try it! B

I was wondering if you all would like to list the supplements you are currently giving for tics/anxiety/OCD/allergies, etc and if you can say which ones you KNOW work and for what? I know that things change and we change our protocols but I'm just curious. I've come to realize that diet doesn't have much effect on ds' issues. I've alllowed all kinds of junk food only to see him go through a waning period....go figure. And, then I've gone totallly healthy and forbid all offending foods, etc and I don't see any change in his tics either good or bad, so I just feel at a loss. The only things that I see that definitely trigger him are teeth issues and stress. After a year and a half, that's all I can come up with. I'm 'guessing' that allergies play a part but the tic increases just don't seem to coincide with his allergies. I do know that we've never had a tic free day since they started. He ALWAYS has an eye winking tic and then the others just come and go. It's truly infuriating and right now I'm just grateful that they've been mild. His OCD/anxiety seems under control with supplements and now I'd like to focus on getting the tics under control. So, if you all would be so kind as to list what you're currently using, I'd be ever so grateful. Also, you may want to state the age and gender of the child, too. Maybe by seeing a list of supplements we(those who feel something is missing) might be able to piece something together and then can discuss it with the child's doctor/naturopath. If you'd like to link to a post you have previously posted, that would work too! thanks Bonnie edited to add: Yes, I used the wrong tense of you're in the title. That kind of stuff drives me crazy when my kid does it, hehe!
-
Kim, yes they did want to give a tetanus shot but the doctor admitted that the risk is very minimal anyway so I refused it. I had a friend who had a terrible reaction to a tetanus shot and that was the last thing I wanted to deal with. I figured the antibiotics alone were pushing it with me! Actually, the hotel doctor on call told me the risk of tetanus was minimal as well as the clinic doc, so I gathered it was safe to decline and they didn't push it on me either, which was nice! Now, if this aching and soreness in my foot would go away I'd be able to enjoy our vacation! B

Yep, it was a ray! I haven't felt pain like that since I gave birth, it was unbelievable! I'm still sore today but I got the doc to change the prescription to Keflex. I need to call my naturopath today and ask him for advice on how to handle the antibiotic if I get any adverse side effects but I found that Keflex has lesser side effects than Cipro.
-
Kim, I'm thinking I'll ask for the Keflex or for augmentin. They already gave me a prescription for a yeast infection since I always get those when I take antibiotics! Thanks for the links!

Hello all, this question is for me. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Cipro? It's in a class of antibiotics that is fluoridated and can have serious side effects. I was put on it here on vacation in FL b/c I got stung by a sting ray. I'm not concerned about the stomach upset, etc. but I am about the potential tendon problems and sun sensitivity. I am already dealing with tendonitis in my elbow so I really don't want to aggravate it. Should I wait until morning and have them put me on a different antibiotic? Or is that futile b/c the bacteria in the Gulf of Mexico only responds to particular antibiotics??? I'm so confused and it doesn't help that I'm in pain either! Bonnie

I had to laugh! I believe it's black cohosh, and I've heard it's wonderful for those menopausal symtoms. Also, wild yam helps as it mimics progesterone and you can usually find it in a cream. When you wrote 'black oshkosh' the first thing that popped into my mind was a picture of a baby in a pair of black OshKosh overalls and I thought, "That would be so cute, why don't I ever see black overalls anyway?". OK, so I'm a little tired this AM! Glad it's working for you!! I'm going to be 39 this weekend and I'm wondering when this 'lady stuff' is going to hit me! Bonnie
