  1. Patty, Between April and Halloween, she hardly ticced at all. If anything, maybe a nose wrinkle and grimace here and there, but nowhere near what she did from February to April. After Halloween night, it was noticable, much like it was in February and March. My daughter even commented herself that she was doing alot of shoulder shrugging. Yesterday there was nothing at all. I do remember when I first noticed them in February, the night before, we went to a chinese buffet and they have this ice cream making machine. She made herself an ice cream that night and I have often wondered if that had anything to do with it. We never really put her on any type of diet modification. She eats normally, which includes basically anything, but never in any excess. She has had candy, ice cream, chips ect.. since April but maybe there is a threshold factor. Very interesting stuff.
  2. My daughter hasn't really ticced much since April. We first noticed her tics last February, so they lasted a few months and then all but went away. Now, Halloween was on a Wednesday and by Saturday she was ticcing noticably. Shoulder shrugs and head movements. Of course, she has been eating the candy. Skittles, chocalate, peanut butter cups. Cause and effect, I don't know but it sure makes me wonder! Nonetheless, I told her no more candy for awhile and yesterday hardly saw any ticcing at all?
  3. I bought this book and saw this thread and wanted to reply. IMO- A waste of money, time and emotions. All of what is included in the book are pages, excerpts, and stories from different sources already attainable from internet searches. Again IMO, poorly done with typos, inconsistencies, poor editing. Can't imagination how he got by without any copyright infringement inquiries. However, the theme of the "book" is similiar to what is discussed here. Main points are: 1) Magnesium supplements 2) Diet Modification (elimination of diary, wheat, sugar, artificial colors etc..) 3) Candida Yeast I guess I want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt in that although most of the information in the 'book" is already contained in various sources on the internet, he did the work and compiled it all for people who are less research and internet savy. The whole hook of cure and strong marketing language is a bit unfair IMO for those who are already emotionally vulnerable from dealing with their childs condition. aj
  4. Is natural or Kids Calm or Bonnies regime a good place to start. What has worked better? aj
  5. As I have posted before, my daughter began with motor tics at the end of February. It seemed that the worst of them were the first 2 weeks. Since then, they have been very mild, only some facial grimacing, shoulder shrugs, and the like. Her presenting tics, the eye rolling, and mouth opening have gone away. I have noticed on a few occasions that she get the hiccups. Mainly, they only last a few minutes and they do not happen daily. This morning, she was hiccuping again, lasted for a few minutes and then gone. Since this has now happen 3-4 times since her onset of tics, I am wondering if this is a vocal tic?? If it is, then I guess any chance of her condition being transient is diminished? Also, is there any opinion on how girls progress with TS vs. boys. I have read the accounts of boys having TS much more than girls, but am uncertain on how tics may differ from boys and girls. Looking forward to your thoughts. AJ
  6. What you are decribing is almost exactly what we are experiencing with my 8 year old daughter. So far very mild, most days hardly noticable. Mostly now only shoulder shrugs and grimacing. I don't know what to make of this whole thing either. Its the not knowing whats going to happen with this that is the worst. If this is all that ever comes of it then no big deal, but how do you really know eh? We have been making sure our daughter gets some magnesium each day. Mainly, she has been eating broccoli (fortunetly she loves it) and purified water enhanced with magnesium sulfate. Not sure if this appropriate levels of magnesium but I do know that tics have not worsened since her onset about 5 weeks ago. In fact, we they first appeared they seemed to be at their worst. Although I have a brother with TS and clearly a genetic link, I'm clinging to the statistics that as many as 20% of children experience transient tics in their early school years. Hoping for the best for all of us! aj
  7. Thanks Chemar. I am interested to hear from some of you as to the specifics of your child. Age of onset of symptoms types of symptoms male or female child known genetic link manifestation of symptoms of family members vs. your child current age of child how the condidtion has progressed how is your child now and what has worked for treatment? I know this is alot to ask, but I trying to get as much info as possible. Also, my daughter is involved in Basketball, Softball, and Soccer. Should I be concerned about her ability to continue productively in these sports. Thanks, aj
  8. Thanks for the info and responses. In answer to Faith's questions: I don't remember all that much about my brothers tics as children, I guess we didn't pay that much attention to the types, just knew he had them. I would say they have been pretty much the same for many years now. One eye winking, mouth movements, hand gestures. He was treated with Haldol as a child for about 5-6 years, low dosage. Didn't seem to do much except give unwanted side effects like lethargy, weight gain, mind altering etc.. so he stopped taking them and hasn't been on mediciation for may years now. I am now wondering if the Haldol has led to the more permanent movement disorder Tardive Dyskinisia but I wouldn't know if his tics are associated from that or TS. So, I have another question about transient tics. Even if there are many or multiple can they still end up being transient. My daughter has multiple such as the mouth opening, grimacing, shoulder shrugging that I have described before, as well as some minor hand and abdomen from time to time. I wouyld think transient tics would involve one or two tics and not many, true or not? How about the magnesium that is found in purified and mineral enhanced water? Would this be helpful and a good source of magnesium. aj
  9. My daughter age 8 has demonstrated tics since about 1 month ago. She started with the eye rolling and mouth opening. eye rolling lasted only a couple of days. Her main tics now are mouth opening, grimacing, shoulder shrugs. At this point these are all very mild and not disruptive in the least. She is very bright, A+ student, well behaved and other issues to speak of. I am 41 years old, have an identical twin brother and an older brother 43 years old with TS. I would say he is in the mild to moderate category. His tics are mainly face and hand but he has had them since about 1st or 2nd grade. Neither me or my twin brother have ever had a tic disorder. He has two children aged 10(boy) and 14(girl) with no signs of a tic disorder. I also have a 10 year old daughter with no signs of a tic disorder. I have read all about the genetic links but am still confused about the possible manifestations of TS especialy for girls. even with a genetic link, can this still turn out to be transient? Any possible way to determine the course or progression? Also, I am a bit overwhelemed by all of the discussions on alternative treatment and triggers. Can someone jsut provide a few suggestions on where to start with this. I'd like to start slow and not overwhelm my daughter as well as myself with immediate changes in our daily living. Looking forward to your comments. AJ
