NewBeginnings Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 How often does your child get blood work done to check their liver and kidney function while on antibiotics? Has anyone's child's liver function come back high and if so, what do you do for it? My son just started to have pain in his right side. It's not constant, but I'm concerned about liver function and plan to take him tomorrow to get it checked, but am just wondering how often people have this checked. Thanks for any responses.
dut Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 Hi - one of my dd7's liver results was high, so our ped suggested Vital Nutrients SAT which is milk thistle (in a certain form that makes for better bioavailability. Our ped reckons it really works and that liver numbers will go down with it's use. My dd can't swallow capsules, so we open them up and hide the taste with probiotic powder.
lyme_mom Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 Every couple months. Milk thistle is helpful for elevated liver enzymes. I guess it detoxes it.
NewBeginnings Posted August 29, 2010 Author Report Posted August 29, 2010 I have him on milk thistle currently. How much do your give your child and how often? He takes one pill once a day right now. It's 350 mg capsule. I have heard not to give milk thistle at the same time as probiotics.
dut Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 Hi - I got mine wrong it's Thorne Research not Vital Nutrients.. I didn't know about not combining it with probiotics - thanks for the heads up.. do you know why you shouldn't mix them?
NewBeginnings Posted August 30, 2010 Author Report Posted August 30, 2010 Hi, I was told "Probiotics need to be taken away from everything Rx or herbal. Many herbals, even if for "support" may have some degree of antimicrobial (and/or antifungal) action that can destroy the probiotics." I don't know if that's true, but I have started to make sure we take milk thistle alone just to be safe.. What dosage of milk thistle are you giving? Hi - I got mine wrong it's Thorne Research not Vital Nutrients.. I didn't know about not combining it with probiotics - thanks for the heads up.. do you know why you shouldn't mix them?

I think it was several capsules a day. It worked.
peglem Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 We usually do checks every 6 months, unless we do a round of rifampin, then we check just before and 1/2 way through the course of rifampin (usually do a 10-14 day course). We,ve never had abnormal results.
Kayanne Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 Does anyone know if this should be done with all antibiotics? We just dropped my daughter down to 150mg of omnicef once a day (she took that twice a day since Feb). Prior to that is was Pen vk twice a day for about 6 mos, and 100mg daily of azith for about 3 months. Her liver has never been checked.
