saidie10 Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 So I was just so damn happy that I convinced my son's Immunologist to prescribe my son 250mg of antibiotic for at least 6 months to a year that I didn't fight about what kind and now I am beginning to wonder if he is on the right kind? DS7 is taking 250mg Penicillin. Anyone know anything about whether this is something that is workable? Dr. K had told us Augmentin. Should I ask DS's Immunologist about this? So confused and concerned about all the different kinds of abx and what is best?!?!?
EAMom Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 is it 250mg of pen once a day? or twice a day? ....once a day is worthless Augmentin is much more clinically effective than pen. (But, I disagree with Dr. K, imo it should always be given 2x a day.)
EAMom Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I would say that the 2 most "popular" (meaning used, and found to be effective) antibiotics on this forum are Azithromycin and Augmentin (I think Aug. XR is actually more effective than reg. Augmentin). One nice thing about Azith. is that it can be given once a day. However, there are supposed to be some strains of strep in the East that are resistant to Azith.

When he had a flare up(ocd/tics/hallucinations) they gave us a 10 day dose of Augmentin 875 mg and everything went away.
saidie10 Posted August 27, 2010 Author Report Posted August 27, 2010 Thank you for the information! I am waiting to hear back from Dr. Cunningham...hoping to get her opinion on Penicillin and on my DS5 whose CamK was 179 and thoughts on him as to where to go next. I will be following up with DS7's Doctor about the abx because I just don't think it is strong enough to be effective!
NancyD Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 Ditto to what Trubiano says. DD was on Pen VK from age 7-10 and did pretty well on it. Rages declined significantly for a couple of years and then when she regressed we started experimenting with other abx. NOTHING helped until we started Augmentin XR 1000 bid in April. Very, very happy with Augmentin XR! Surprisingly, not seeing the yeast problems we had with other abx. Nancy
