GraceUnderPressure Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Now that we are working on lining up a PANDAS dr for my 18yo ds with Tourette's, I am trying to decide whether to cancel our appt. with the neurologist for an EEG in 2 wks. Is it likely to provide us with any useful info at this point? The neuro also talked about the possibility of doing a sleep study. My DS sleeps heavily, wets the bed almost every night, & is very hard to wake up. I think his sinuses may be an issue there. When he was a baby, most of his pictures are with his mouth hanging open because he was congested so often. But we know now that he had a milk allergy (IgG). And nowadays, he has added a few more. Still I can't help but wonder if he is one of those kids who would get better if he had his tonsils &/or adenoids taken out. This spring's allergy season caused a waxing that has been really scary. Anyway, so can anyone tell me from experience if an EEG or sleep study are worth doing & what we might learn from them?
melanie Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 We did it at Columbia Presp about 1 1/2 years ago,Imglad we did.Dan was wetting the bed for a week or 2 and we thought he was having seizures. We didnt know it was PANDAS at that time.No issues with wetting since IVs so Im glad we know for sure hes not having seizures. So to rule out any serious med issues I would do it.

Melanie, which did you do - the EEG or sleep study or both?
amy s Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 My dd also had EEGs to rule out seizure activity. Turns out it was all related to pandas, no seizures. I am glad we know that it wasn't seizures, but it was a horrible experience so I wish we didn't have to go through that. (She had to have it done awake and sedated because she was raging so bad during the EEG that it was not readable.) We also didn't know anything about pandas at the time (this was about 2.5 years ago at the time of the EEGs) Good luck with your decision!
trubiano Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 (edited) I would do the sleep study because of the bed wetting and hard to wake up issues. I am a sleep technician and there could be other issues going on other than pandas. Also, while the study is being performed we are doing a full night(6-8 hr) of EEG, so they might pick up something not seen in a regular EEG study. Edited August 19, 2010 by trubiano
melanie Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I don't remember I think it was an eeg he had all of the probes attached all over him. We thought he was having seizures so I doubt it was a sleep study only.
