I went to get another 10 day supply of Augmentin for my 5.5 y/o daughter per Dr. B's Rx (We see him back again Monday). Anyhow I mention to the pharmacist that I another 10 day suppy of the Augmentin XR and he corrects me that she's on the ES. He told me that XR only comes in pill form and is 1000mg (she is taking 600 mg BID). The good news is she's probably 95% better than she was a month ago. Anyone else's kids taking this ES & if so, does that mean Extra Strength? I guess I thought the XR was preferable???

Hi Amy

My son started out with Augmentin 600 mg ES BID when he first became symptomatic. It helped reduce his tics by 50% overnight and then slowly overall improvement. We did it for two FULL weeks meaning 14 days not 10. We did this twice so overall 28 days on the ES. My son did come up positive on rapid strep at onset. Subsequently we saw Dr. T and did bloodwork and found Mycoplasma titers to be high so we switched to Biaxin 250 BID which worked wonders on DS8. When we saw Dr K for IVIG DS8 was 95% symptom free. We went ahead with the IVIG as per Dr. K's advise. We are now 7 weeks post IVIG. Dr K suggested Augmentin 600 ES again for flareups.

Yes, I think ES stands for extra strength. I believe the standard strep throat protocol is Augmentin 500 mg BID or QD but the newer evidence is in favor of the 600 mg and hence the label ES to imply the extra strength and differentiate to the pharmacist the doc indeed wants the new protocol.

The XR or extended release is like any other XR medication. I believe its indicated for children whose symptoms are long lingering, fluctuate thru out each day and affects their functioning. The extended release boosts up the blood levels of the Augmentin/any meds with bursts thru out the day at designated intervals. That keeps the blood levels high and stable with the meds and reduces the daily flare ups Other meds you may have heard of being in the XR format would be cardiac meds, ulcer meds, psychiatric meds etc. - Jodie

There have been a few parent discussions on the differences in "types" Augmentin prescriptions--it has to do with the levels of Clavuanate acid (sp?) and there are guidelines...I hope this is helpful, here are a couple of discussion links--

T. Mom thanks for sharing the posts-they in turn lead me to other links that were very informative. I will have my husband calculate my daughter's weight into Kg for me (he's a dietitian) so I an make sure she's not getting too much clavulanic acid/day. I would hope that the doctors would have factored this into the dosage.

JAG 10- thanks-she's doing welll and we'll se Monday what Dr B. says for our f/u visit. Unfortunately we had all the lab work drawn on our 3.5 y/o daughter too and she will have her own appt time with Dr. B on Monday-SHe had a skin infection that tested positive for strep in May). I really don't want to even believe that she has PANDAS too, but it's getting hard to ignore. SO we'll see-this is the same age that our 5.5 y./o started showing symptoms.

Thanks for all the support as always,

Amy
