but, I wonder if it could be exposure to bacteria or viruses that the mother and, consequently, the baby within the first 6 months or so of life (due to maternal antibodies) aren't used to.. is there such a thing as local strains.. I'm assuming there is... I know there is with strep.

could also be lack of vitamin D...after all these people are migrating from relatively sunny places (near the equator) to the UK. Here's another situation (Somalis in MN) where low vitamin D is thought to be at least part of the problem:

Maybe stress plays a factor too...which is why the newly migrated families have more autism than others with the same ancestory?
