lynn Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 DS has three days left on his tapered 18 day steroid burst and has had 15 days of Augmentin. Yesterday he complained of a cough and sore throat and now he has a full fledged cold (or maybe allergy?) He has no fever and his throat is not red. So now what do I do (she whines)? Stop steroids? Stop Augmentin? Give him lots of water to drink? Take him to the emergency room? Strip off all my clothes and run down the street screaming? OK, maybe not the last one, which would provoke excessive hillarity in this potentially serious decision. He has a Dr. appointment on Thursday. Is that time enough to talk? On the improvement front, some slight advancement. Not as much OCD. Somewhat less rage, or at least now some awareness that rage is controllable. Now making jokes that are truly funny! DS is 14 and has had this since 5, so a lot of ground to make up. Also, got the CaM Kinase II results back--149, almost the poster child for PANDAS.
thereishope Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I'm going on a limb here and saying not to strip down streaking:) I say stick with the steroid burst right now, esp since you're tapering down. A cold and/or allergies would worsen things. Do you know if he has seasonal allergies or dust mites? Can he breathe through his nose? If not, maybe he's sleeping with his mouth open and it's drying it out. That makes mine hurt a lot. It sounds like he's not really backsliding. If he starts to backslide bad, you could take him to the dr but you have to remember that he runs the chance of a false negative strep test since he's on abs.
peglem Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 It does no good to run down the street naked, unless you have a pineapple on your head. I thought everybody knew that! My daughter gets a little sick when she finishes a steroid burst, too. She's got a pretty weak immune system, so I think the steroids just allow things that are just barely under control by her immune system to get a little stronger.
lynn Posted May 17, 2010 Author Report Posted May 17, 2010 Thank you all for your support and wisdom. As helpfully pointed out, I do not have a pineapple so have cancelled the run. I will keep everything else the same too. Interesting to know that the steroids can have an effect on immune system that quickly. There's an awful lot I don't know about this stuff! Lynn
