Melanie's recent strep prompted me to ask if those of us who work in schools, daycares, ect., how often do you get pink eye?

I get it 3 or 4 times a year which I never gave much thought to before, but now that I think about it, I don't think my colleagues get it as often as I do. So, if it is most often strep or staph, is that the same kind of strep infection that goes through your bloodstream? I mean, they only prescribe topically antibiotic eyedrops, not ones you ingest, so besides passing on the "pink eye" to the girls, which has never happened, do I need to worry about this? Does this indicate something about my immune system that I get pink eye so often? I am a speech therapist and my hands are all over kids' mouths and faces all day. I'm constantly using sanitizer!

Has anyone's child ever had a symptom exaserbation from pink eye or someone around them having it?

Danny seems to get pink eye more than my daughter,I dont typically get sick ,I did years ago when I first started teaching,I am pretty healthy Im a PE teacher so Im constantly running.I think this year kids are sicker than before.I think their parents should keep them home and hand sanitizers are not helping.

Since your a speech path can I ask you a question about danny,He hears people stutter when they speak,I have asked a hundred Mds and no one seems t understand why. They say ,maybe its sensory?? This is the one tic that stops him in his tracks. When he hears this he will curse, have you ever heard of this??

Melanie,

I have not heard of this except from you, here. The only thing I can think of that is somewhat related is DAF, delayed auditory feedback which is a device for a person who stutters themself and delays the feedback/hearing of their own stuttering speech resulting in making their own speech fluent. It would be VERY interesting to see if that device may a difference for Danny when this happens to him.

If this starts happening again, your school's special education department should be able to let you borrow one for a trial. I have a contact at LaSalle University who is a stuttering specialist that I could ask? When this happens, does EVERYONE he hears speaking sound like they stutter or only certain people? How long does it usually last?

Hi Jii,

Funny you ask that, its just certain people.Whats the device called ,can I purchase one? I will ask about it as soon as tomorrow.if a person stammers , if they speak and stop and speak again he will curse .This is his BIGGEST issue.

Thanks(send me the bill)

It's just certain people.... do you hear anything different in these people's speech?

You can google it DAF, delayed auditory feedback stuttering (try those four words). I wouldn't buy one, especially since you work in the schools and it would really be an experiment. That's why people borrow them, to see if it is effective first.

My pleasure, no charge :(

Jag10, I don't think this is what you are asking but I know that with my pandas ds that he doesn't get typical strep symptoms even with positive cultures. The second time he had strep that I was aware of (prior to my knowing about pandas) I had taken him in for pink eye... the ped swabbed him just because she said she always does with pink eye since pink eye can be the result of untreated strep..sure enough he tested positive.

My son used to get pink eye alot when he was in public school (we homeschool now). I never thought about it being strep. We usually just did the warm compress and sometimes would use a topical antibiotic cream. We never had a swab done bc most times the dr would just call in the cream for me without a visit.

One of my colleagues had pink eye about 6 weeks ago. It went away after about a week and a few days later, she developed typical symptoms for strep throat and did culture posiive.

So, my pink eye is gone, I used a topical antibiotic eyedrop, but do you think I should get tested for strep? Neither of my girls ever show typical strep symptoms, they are always assymptomatic.

It's a tough one. I had pink eye without strep this year as did my non pandas kid... I don't mean to imply you can't have pink eye without strep. I know that when my son had the pink eye she gave me drops.. when the 48 hour culture came back positive she told me I could stop his drops and she called in an antibiotic. When my non pandas ds had pink eye he was on antibiotics for an ear infection at the same time and the dr. said that if that didn't clear up the pink eye in 2 days to start the drops too because the antibiotics just don't cut it for a lot of people with the pink eye... It was not the same dr. who had me stop drops with my son when he got the positive culture though.

Personally if you feel ok, I might not get swabbed... but I know when I had strep I had a very very sore throat and there was no mistaking it.. if you think you could have it without the sore throat....

Funny. I'm sitting here right now with pink eye. I get it a LOT, but DS rarely every get it. I wonder if he is passing it to me without getting the symptoms himself, like strep. I also get very bad sore throats often that do go away within a few days, but I rarely have gone to the doctor for them. Starting to wonder if I am the carrier here :)

Tantrums.. when my pandas son had the pink eye he did actually have obvioius pink eye to go with it... good question though if one can have it and you not realize it because when I went to my doctor for my pink eye in January my daughter had it too.... I had her and my youngest with me (my non pandas kids) and my doctor looked at my little guy and told me that he had it too. I hadn't really noticed it until he pointed it out to me because it was not pink pink like mine was, but sure enough when I looked I could see why he said my son had it.

Of course if he has strep minus the sore throat and is giving it to you and you aren't treating you, I would think it could result in pink eye?
