monarchcat Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 My son takes the 1000mg augmentin XR and they ARE huge! He is really good about pills but he hates these. He has gagged on them a couple times and that makes it tough. But, what has always worked best for him is to take a big mouthful of juice, push the pill in, swish everything around and then swallow. It's how he takes all his pills and it works for him... I don't know if that's helpful or not, though. I wish I knew of a better way.... We switched to augmentin, but my daughter refuses to take the huge pill. Cutting in half never works with her because it is scratchy and harder to swallow. Any tips?May
thereishope Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) No suggestions since all my kids still take liquid (even the 9 year old). But..someone did post before not to split/cut Augmentin.Their pharmacist mentioned something about affecting the time release. Edited April 16, 2010 by Vickie
kimballot Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) My kids take all big pills with a big spoonful of applesauce. Just take the big spoonful and shove the pill in the middle - then swallow without chewing. It has worked for years. You may need to practice with just the applesauce first. You can split them, as long as you take both halves at the same time (one right after the other). Splitting them to cut the dosage in half is what you should not do.
thereishope Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 Ooohh. Thank you for telling me that. I misunderstood. No suggestions since all my kids still take liquid (even the 9 year old).
