simplygina Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 We are on day 1 of Biaxin and already we have stomach upset and a headache. We've been religious about the Probiotics, he's been eating yogurt and bananas, I even got him to drink a little ginger tea. He did take a nice long epsom salt bath with some essentials oils and I've been giving him Ibuprofen. He seems a little better but I'm worried since we are only day one and I have such high hopes for this abx. Do the side effects go away or just keep getting worse? Is the XR version easier on the stomach like with Augmentin? Not sure we'll make through 10 days if this is how it is going to be. On the bright side, after a hellish day yesterday, things have gone amazingly well today. It could be that he went snowboarding and is exhausted, but usually that leaves him grumpy, and he's not. I know it is too soon to tell, but I'm feeling hopeful.

She always takes it with food and takes probiotics twice per day.

I know it is too soon to tell, but I'm feeling hopeful. My daughter is on 500 mg daily for two weeks - no headache or stomache upset. Sounds like you are doing all you can to keep him comfortable, if these are, in fact, side effects from this drug. If he's doing better overall, though, that sounds really hopeful. Did he test for micoplasm? Just curious if that is why you are trying Biaxin. That was our reason.. And it's working.
syndony Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Biaxin and plaquinil are great drugs for lyme disease. But one thing you have to keep in mind is that all cases are different. Mostly two people will not have the same two treatments with the exact same success. What works for one person may not always for another. We're dealing with a disease that has so many strains, then you have co infections and strains of co infections. Heck, Dr. Schaller wrote a book on bartonella, he had discovered a certain number of new strains, then within a year or so he had to write a supplement book to the first one because in just that year he had discovered several more.
zazuk2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 My Ds5 has been on the generic for 5 days now. We give him Bio K (a probiotic liquid) in the mornig and then FloraStor (a capsule we break into peanut butter) in the afternoon. We then give the liquid Bioxin (gen) just before he goes to sleep. For the first two days he said his stomach hurt litterally for a minute (both days same complaint in the mid morning) and then he was fine the rest of the time. Has not said anything about his stomach for past 3 days. He does seem very hyper though.. not sure if that is because he is a five year old boy or is reacting to the Bioxin. Some days it all just seems to blur together! Kari
sf_mom Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Try 1/3 cup bentonite clay in the morning and 1/3 cup in the evening. You can mix with water or juice.... it is tasteless but has consistency of Pepto-Bismol. Helps to eliminate toxins from the stomach. I take it, as well as all my kids and since taking it they have not complained of stomach aches. On the bright side, after a hellish day yesterday, things have gone amazingly well today. It could be that he went snowboarding and is exhausted, but usually that leaves him grumpy, and he's not. I know it is too soon to tell, but I'm feeling hopeful. Day 3 and the complaints about stomach aches and headaches seem to have disappeared. He did have a bowel movement that freaked him out though. He said it was very green and stringy. Anyone experience anything like that? I told him I know it was kind of embarrassing but tomorrow I'd like to see it if it happens again. We are trying Biaxin because we know it gets worse when he gets sick, but we can't isolate what is causing it. His mycoplasma was normal, lyme and strep all normal too. He may just be one of those kids that doesn't mount much of an immune response though so he doesn't get raised titers. Hard to know. We are going to do the blood draw for the Cunningham test tomorrow though. We figure Biaxin should just about knock anything out. We tried Augmentin and he still ended up with an ear and sinus infection. Omnicef knocked out the ear infection, but his sinuses were still plugged after more than 10 days. The Biaxin seems to have cleared the sinuses. I tend to think he harbors strep in the sinuses because he gets that weird smell. His tonsils are out so he doesn't get the tone in his voice he used to have every time. 1 day of the Biaxin and the streppy smell was gone. His brother also has the weird smell though but he swabbed negative. He still seems to be improving, though today he was a bit worse than the past two. His mood is greatly improved. He slept with his brother last night and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. It was worse this morning and better after we gave him his a.m. dose of abx. Usually he is better in the morning and worse at night. He's been really compliant and kind to his brother and hasn't fixated on anything. He's evened things up a bit, but it's not super noticeable. We didn't really do much today, and usually by the end of a boring day spent at home he would grumpy and ticcy/ocding like crazy. I expected him to start nagging me about going to the book store but he never did. The things he is fixated on right now are still there (Percy Jackson books, getting a knee board for summer, the upcoming blood draw for the cunningham test), but he lets them go after mentioning them once. That is a huge improvement. Right now he is having a marshmallow gun fight with his brother and they are actually having fun. Love to hear them laughing and playing. I think the Biaxin does make him rather hyper though. I remember awhile back someone posted about how strange-but-awesome it is to see your kid do something he hasn't done for a long long time. The other night he came in at 2 am, scared because he woke up and realized that a light was on in the basement (he was worried about ghosts before bed though did fall asleep in his own bed which is pretty significant). I told him I must have left it on because I was working down there before I came to bed. And to our utter amazement he went downstairs alone and turned off the light. DH and I were literally stunned. Before he would have crawled into his sleeping bag on the floor and then pestered me until I went to turn it off. He usually won't go downstairs during the day alone. And tonight he ate potatoes. He has NEVER liked potatoes. Not even fries or potato chips. Tonight he ate roasted potatoes and told me how delicious they were. Pretty amazing. All in all I am seeing progress and hoping for a better week. Last week really sucked and I can't do it again. DH is leaving for 10 days this month and I've been so worried about being alone with the kids. If things continue like they are, I'm hopeful it won't be bad at all. For those that have gotten an abx Rx from Dr. T., how have you had it refilled after the first 10 days?
