How do you handle yeast infections with all the antibiotics they are taking. She developed a pretty bad one today and and won't go to the bathroom because of it. We have spent the entire evening trying to coax her to go. Besides doing yogurt which I am doing, what else can I do? Probiotics? What kind exactly? Any other suggestions? Should I continue the antibiotic? Thank you in advance!

We give probiotics daily, I don't have any that I really recommend that we use except Threelac. I think it works really well. My dd8 can't stand the taste so I also buy capusules of other stuff, I switch around our brands all the time.

Also, you can buy monistat type products over the counter vaginal yeast medication and use it topically. This has helped us many times over the years.

You should definitely have her on probiotics while she's taking antibiotics, but these are more to keep yeast at bay. There are also medications to kill off the yeast once you already have an overgrowth. Nystatin is a very safe one, but there are stronger ones as well.

The only thing we have found that works for my daughter's vag yeast is diflucan. The nystatin seems to keep the tummy pretty well (we've done both at the same time) but we call in the diflucan whenever the "itch" comes back.

Do you just put the medicine on the outer area? Is that sufficient? I feel so silly asking this, but I just can't imagine how I would treat her if it had to be done like an adult female does it. She would not cooperate at all. This I know!!!

Not sure how old your dd is. I have 2 sons, but work in OBGYN. If you are sure it is yeast, and she won't allow you to use a topical, I think oral is the best. I don't like forcing grown women let alone little ones to have things done down there unless you HAVE to. Just putting the med on the outside may not be enough.

Not silly- a real concern. This is why I use the diflucan tablets.

Yes, just rub it on like a cream anywhere that she is irritated, just don't use the applicator and don't insert it. As the others have said, you may also need some oral medication, but the monistat could help with the symptoms. I used it on my girls every time they had this since they were very young. With all tha antibiotics they've been on, they had itchy "bottoms" all the time. :(

You know how OCD can start when somebody suggests a danger? Well, instruction at school on stranger danger and good touch-bad touch had my daughter terrified to let mommy put cream on privates. It has taken quite a lot to get so that she will try to let me put on the cream. By that I mean she is to the point where she knows she needs the help and will try to cooperate but still reflexively protects from it.

Thanks for the help. Last night was pretty rough but after applying some cream, it seemed to do the trick. So should I continue the antibiotics? I did not give her the dose last night because she was in too much pain and I felt I had to take steps to fix the problem. I would like to continue the antibiotics because I think that maybe, just maybe, I am seeing a slight improvement, but I don't know how we are going to do it if we have to deal with this all the time. I was getting worried that we were going to have to take her to the ER for help.

I will definitely seek out the suggestions made. Thank you!

I know it sounds gross, but plain unsweetened yogurt used on the outer parts can help with the itching...my daughters haven't seemed to get anything really severe--If you think it is a full blown vaginal yeast infefction, then I would ask the doctor for Diflucan.

Also, the doctor told me that a shallow bath with a little baking soda can help irritation in the vaginal area.

When my daughter took azthromycin every day in the summer, she had chapped lips and cracks in the corners of her mouth, after she brushed her teeth, I would make her swish with the plain yogurt and I would lightly coat her lips with it...within 2 days her lips look fine.

I had cracks in the corner of my mouth when I had to take azithromycin for 10 days to clear my step...the yogurt really helped.
