Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 Can our kids, on high doses of abx, get infected again? A Dr. friend of mine told me they can't, the abx will prevent reinfection. I'm not so sure.
thereishope Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 I'm sorry, but I don't think even proph abx are 100% effective. There are some on here who have tested + for strep while on abs and you can also get a false negative while on abs. I believe the idea of proph abx is that it will help prevent infection. Your chances will lower but I don't know by how much.
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 18, 2010 Author Report Posted February 18, 2010 Thanks Vickie. My son is spiraling down and I am starting to panic. We can't go back to where we were in October. I'm sorry, but I don't think even proph abx are 100% effective. There are some on here who have tested + for strep while on abs and you can also get a false negative while on abs. thereishope Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 I believe some have increased dosage or if they have another infection, some have switched abs for a time being. Perhaps someone who has been in that situation will chime in. I can't rememeber, are you seeing one of the "top docs" that are often mentioned on here or are you seeing someone local? Do you have a supportive doctor? He goes to boarding school, correct? Have you asked the school if anything has been making rounds in terms of illness? Tha may help you identify the problem.
colleenrn Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 Two of my kids have gotten bilateral ear infections twice while on the prophylactic dose of Zithromax. It depends on what antibiotic they are on , what and where the infection is. It is possible, while on an antibiotic, to still get an infection. What antibiotic is your child on?

I consulted with Dr. T last week. I am having a little bit of trouble getting in touch with him though. He agreed to put him back on clindamycin. I tried this for a week. Before the Clindomycin he was on 500 mg of Azith 3 - 4 times a week. I switch back to Augmentin 2000 XR on Sunday (we tried it for 7 weeks prior to T & A without any success). I know some kids are allergic to mold and react to it. I am wondering if that could be happening now. Dr. T also said to try a low dose 40 mg of prednisone for 5 days. I started that tonight. That is a good idea to ask the school nurse if anything is going around. He is home tonight and doing rituals like crazy. This disease is so heartbreaking.
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 He was on prophylactic dose of Azith before switching to Clindomycin last week. I switched again to Augmentin on Monday. I think think the Clindomycin works pretty well but it just scares me to use it too long.
thereishope Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 I think I'm getting tired. I'm confused. What med is he on right now? What med did you see the most success on?Was he still on that when you started to see backsliding?
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 My post was confusing. Sorry. Dr. T. just called me. He was waiting for my son's lab results. His Mycoplasma IGG was elevated to 2.5. Dr. T explained he has or has had a coinfection. He recommended putting him back on the Clindomycin for at least 10 days. Very interesting. He had never been tested for the mycoplasma before. Thanks Dr. T!
thereishope Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 I wonder how it is determined if a person gets clindamycin, Biaxin, or Zith for Mycro P and PANDAS.
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 I'm not sure. I was just going back in posts and saw yours Vickie on Mycroplasma from a few weeks ago. Your d had it too? How is she doing?
thereishope Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 My non-PANDAS son had it. He's doing well. Thank you for asking.
