smartyjones Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 i'm just curious how long after having food dye, kids would tend to have a reaction? i would think it would be rather soon - correct? i don't really think it's that but this morning my son was a little hyper - not too bad. yesterday was ds8's birthday party at a baseball gym and i let them have blue gatorade of all things! i would think a hyper reaction would be within 12 hours, not after. not sure if it could be anything or just my horror at allowing them to drink that gunk! thanks.
pixiesmommy Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Pixie's is immediate- within the hour, but residual effects for up to 3 weeks.
thereishope Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 If he hasn't had it for awhile, his reaction to it might be strong. Does he only get hyper from it?
momto2pandas Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 My kids react almost right away to Red Dye #40. Reaction lasts maybe a couple or few hours. I read in a book chapter somewhere that gifted kids have a tendency to react to Red #40. Interestingly, the top 3 kids in my ds6's class academically all react to Red #40 with behavior issues. i'm just curious how long after having food dye, kids would tend to have a reaction? i would think it would be rather soon - correct? i don't really think it's that but this morning my son was a little hyper - not too bad. yesterday was ds8's birthday party at a baseball gym and i let them have blue gatorade of all things! i would think a hyper reaction would be within 12 hours, not after. not sure if it could be anything or just my horror at allowing them to drink that gunk! thanks.
simplygina Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 my son reacts immediately to red dye. we are still trying to figure out if yellows and blues affect him (i'm assuming they do), and if so what the reaction is. with red dye he is hyper, talks non-stop, acts like he has ants in his pants, and his tics go nuts. It can last more than 24 hours and probably has longer lasting but more subtle effects as well. I hate that stuff! It's dramatic enough that he checks labels and usually avoids anything obviously red. Sometimes he decides he just doesn't care though. Luckily his mood stays pretty good.
