JMTho,

Gosh, you've brought back some memories for me. I used to buy melatonin in the States when I was working. They worked amazing for me. I even bought a book on them,

MELATONIN natures sleeping pill. Ray Sahelian MD

I still have it on my bookcase and it reads,

Consult a physician familiar with its use if

Pregnant, serious illness, you have an autoimmune disorder, taking immune suppressing meds ie cortisol and cycosporine, diabetic or hormonal imbalance.

This information may have changed as I bought the book about 20 years ago - showing my age now. (started working when I was 4)

The book is great however as is goes into detail about the chemicals needed for sleep so I'll have a read in bed tonight and post if there is anything of interest supplement wise.

Hope you get some sleep tonight dut, I'm putting hubby on the nightshift, can you try giving that a go.

Jules

jewels - I wish I could do the hubby bit.. my hubby is a kind of "go to work only" kind a guy... at least the suggestion got the only out loud guffaw I've done so far today :-)

I just read my own last post and thought omg I sound like a real *******.... I didn't mean to come across so facetiously.. sorry folks... I think sometimes my response to lack of sleep is a sort of manic gallows humour that doesn't always come across so good.....

dut,

Its that English sense of humour coming out of you when you reach that frazzled point. (The dry one!) I've put my foot in it twice today. We could do with some PANDAS night nannies.

DUT, we have used GABA and I can tell you our regimen. I think you know that we, also, had the 8-11 times/night wakings. I still haven't recovered from that. I feel I have PTSD from it. Seriously..

At the height of our sleeping issues, we gave DD 3 mg of Melatonin and 1 GABA pill (can't remember the dose. But it was an adult dose. Sometimes we broke it in half, sometimes we gave a full pill). We also did Kids Calm throughout the day and for sure, right before bed. We also had her soak in Epsom Salt baths each night. When we used this regimen, we got the best results.

Now that she is sleeping better again, we do only the 3 mg of Melatonin each night before bed.

Since you and I have the same ped, you know that she is a big believer in using melatonin to put the children to sleep and GABA to keep them asleep. However, when the situation gets bad, these other remedies are ones I would try as well.

Good luck!!!

thanks again folks for the info.. I'll be buying melatonin tomorrow and also trying the epsom salt baths and the natural calm, which we have but haven't used consistently. Time to use the big guns...... thanks again.

I gave my DS GABA twice. Both nights he was totally hyper before bed and couldn't sleep all night. Did it twice just to make sure that it was the GABA. Most nights we give him 3mg melatonin, an advil, fish oil, zinc, inositol, and another dose of magnesium (which is also has a tranquilizing effect). He takes Epsom salt baths with lavender essential oil 2-3 times a week as well. When he is having and exacerbation it doesn't always do the trick but when he is not so bad it does. I've been known to break out the Benadryl after a few bad nights. And if he doesn't have the melatonin he will come out and ask for it after about half an hour. The longer he has to wait to fall asleep the worse it gets. Keeping him asleep...well that has always been another matter entirely, but the past week he has been letting his brother sleep with him and it seems to help (even though they fight for the first 15 minutes they are together). Sleep has ALWAYS been hard with him. He has only slept thru the night in his own room for about 6 months when he was 4 and from January 2009 until now. During Dec. and Jan. he was having lots of trouble again (convinced aliens were going to kidnap him) but I decided he simply was not coming back into our room. 8 out of 10 years being woken up at least once is just WAAAYYY too long. He managed to work through it with the cooperation of a very willing little brother who will do anything for some positive attention. Also, a few other things that work well for him is no TV (actually we got rid of the TV entirely and that has helped everything tremendously. We do allow a few DVDs on the weekends) or computer games on school nights, making sure he gets a bunch of activity during the day and putting him to bed quite early. It seems his sleep window is around 8 and if we miss it we are looking at 10:30 before he is tired again. Also we figured out that he quite hypoglycemic, so making sure he has a good snack with protein before bed has helped quite a bit as well. Good luck!

Avoid all of those and sleep will improve?

balance GABA / glutamate is one of the most important balances to be kept under control. avoiding these foods encourages the increase of GABA resulting in a more appropriate behavior and of course a good sleep. Moreover, these substances are not good for anyone, much less to our children.

It costs nothing to try, and who experienced a beneficial effect with only the assumption of GABA must try.
