peglem Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I'd emailed my son's doctor about brother's results (they came in before mine and my daughters), and he suggested a 10-day course of antibiotics and then retest titers 2 weeks after the end of treatment. I haven't emailed him about my, or my daughter's, results. I'm thinking, though, that we should probably do the same thing. Based on what the nurse from the clinic that we had the titers drawn at said, though, I'm thinking that they won't prescribe.... thus I'm contemplating ordering online so that we can all be on this 10-day course of abx at the same time (my son who is the "patient" is already on long term abx). I think it would be a good idea for you and your 19yo to go ahead and do a course of abx as well- better safe than sorry! The nurse's interpretation of the elevated #'s may be correct, it makes sense to me, but I think that is more conjecture than proven fact, and I'd rather be on the safe side. I wonder if 2 weeks after treatment is enough time to see a drop in titers?..and these tests do not indicate current infection (don't rule it out either).
sf_mom Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 We tested our family too...... My husband: ASO 283 and Anti-DNAse-B 680 Myself: ASO 102 and Anti-DNAse-B Negative PANDAs Son: ASO 244 and Anti-DNAse-B Negative Potential PANDAS Twins: Negative We are treating my husband because of the following symptoms: Reflux, GI Issue, strange milk maid grip but doesn't open and close hands, inability to sleep 'at times'..... We had previously chalked symptoms up to work related stress. We will continue to track titers in hopes they are sub negative eventually.
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I heard the same as Peg, it can take up to 3 months for titers to come down. Please... Help me understand... REFERENCE RANGES FOR LAB USED: ASO: 0 - 200 Anti-DNase-B: Preschool Children = 0 - 60; School Children = 0 - 170; Adults = 0 - 85 PATIENT: 10 year old boy (my son) His most recent strep titers: ASO = 248.2; Anti-DNase-B = 2720 **At his most recent doctor visit a few weeks ago, his doctor suggested that the family have titers drawn. We live 3 hours from my son's doctor, so I went to a local clinic back at home and my other two kids and myself had our titers drawn (my husband can't get over there for a few more weeks because of work).** Following are the results, as well as what the I was told by the nurse from this clinic who called with the results: PATIENT'S BROTHER: 12 years old ASO = 263.6; Anti-DNase-B = 1360 * Nurse said that this shows he has had a recent strep infection. PATIENT'S SISTER: 19 years old (was home for Xmas break; goes to college 2 hrs. from home) ASO = 193.7; Anti-DNase-B = 480 * Nurse said that all titers were normal. I did not discover these numbers until hardcopy results arrived in mail. PATIENT'S MOM (me): ASO = 176.6; Anti-DNase-B = 340 * Nurse said that all titers were normal. I did not discover these numbers until hardcopy results arrived in mail. **I called and asked about my and my daughter's results, as they are clearly not in the Anti-DNAse-B Reference Range of 0 - 85. I was told that they were completely normal because since my son had had strep, even though it wasn't diagnosed and/or treated, the results for my daughter and myself meant that our bodies were exposed to the strep but our bodies fought it off and we didn't get it. She said, "So you see... those numbers are a good thing."** I am sitting here thinking that if that is indeed the case, then fine. But I have a 10 year old son who is probable PANDAS and in my mind it is very hard for me to be so nonchalante about the strep that it obviously running around our house because of the tics, the ocd, the sleeping with us at night, etc. I couldn't even tell you when Brother had strep... but his titers are way up... I'd emailed my son's doctor about brother's results (they came in before mine and my daughters), and he suggested a 10-day course of antibiotics and then retest titers 2 weeks after the end of treatment. I haven't emailed him about my, or my daughter's, results. I'm thinking, though, that we should probably do the same thing. QUESTIONS: I really respect the knowledge of the people on this board and am wondering what input, thoughts, and suggestions you may have? Treat? Don't Treat? Are my daughter's and my titers really considered normal? Even with a PANDAS kid in the house? Any and all responses welcome!! Thanks so much! - Karen
