If C. difficile is Dr. K.'s concern, a switch to 2x daily pen (which is narrow spectrum) would be an alternative to going off abs completely.

 

From the writeup, it seems that C. difficile is more of a problem in hospital/nursing home settings.

Would Augmentin also be a viable alternative? Does anyone know where it lies on the "spectrum" range as an antibiotic?

Aug. is just Amox. with c. acid...it is considered a broad spectrum antibiotic.....amox. being a moderate one. You can't get any narrower than Pen VK.
