CZL Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 Want to know some more about benzathine penicillin injections, get one injections every 28days. It is said it is more effective for preventing from strep infection and safe long term??? Any PANDAS kid tried this with success or failure? I noticed on this forum very few tried this, any more explanation on this? Thanks
P_Mom Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 I heard it is VERY effective...however, most who have tried it had to stop it because it is said to be EXTREMELY painful.
peglem Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 We did one VERY painful injection (4 years ago). She seemed to improve for about 10 days. Tested rapid positive again 14 days later. I like the idea of this, because it doesn't go through the digestive tract...but we just couldn't do it anymore.

So it is effective for PANDAS healing just like what Azith/Augmentin does? the spectrum of anti-bacterium is narrow, maybe just work specific on strep and don't need to take any probiotic and does not have any other side-effect --- or it means it is most safe antibiotic than others? Yes, it is very very painful. Does it need high dose than standard for PANdAS ?

Actually my son did that once ( yes, he feared it becasue of pain ) before I tried any other antibiotic, but we did not see anything in that month.

The doctor prescribed this injection just becasue of his ASO was high, his throat culture was negative for twice in the past.

Well, 1st of all, it took 5 of us to even get the 1st injection administered (and she was much smaller then!) Still, she jerked and not all the bolus actually went in. She was terrified to even go to this doctors office after that, and she loves her pediatrician. But, after all that, the strep came right back 14 days later...so, we decided it wasn't the right treatment for her. But also, my daughter was MISERABLE with PANDAS at the time, so yes, I felt terrible inflicting more pain on my child. Maybe if it had been a whizz-bang success, I would have tried it again, even if it hurt...I don't know.
rosalyn Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 I seem to be missing something here. My son is on Phenoxymethylpenicillin Potassium aka Penicillin V tablets rather than augmentin. I was told that this is basically the same as the injectable form but because of the pain of the shot and his age and size best to do tablet form. The neuro said that this abx specifically targets strep whereas augmentin is broad spectrum and goes after various types of bacterial infections but also augmentin has alot of side effects specifically GI. I am wondering why so many are on augmentin rather than penicillin V tabs. Given what I was told or have I been misinformed? Or does it depend on the severity and range of symptoms? Or has it something to do with contraindications with other drugs? Just curious really to see why Augmentin is the Rx of choice here if what our neuro says is true. If someone has the answers would love to know. Thanks Roz
thereishope Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 I think the monthly pen injection used to be the norm for RF. I've also heard that they are painful and burn. When I inquired about it, the nurse said it really takes a toll on the tummy too. But, then, I don't really trust what that office says anymore.

I noticed on this forum very few tried this, any more explanation on this? Thanks I wanted to let you know that we wasted a considerable amount of time on pen and then Bicillin injections. Our infectious disease doc was insistent they would work. We saw titers increase and behavior plummet. Needles to say, we don't see him any more. Just wanted to pass this along. Dawn
peglem Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 PenVK was our first attempt at prophylaxis. It didn't work, strep came back!
MMC Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 I was diagnosed with Sydenham's as a child, and was on monthly Bicillin injections for 10 years. That's at least 120 shots in the butt that really hurt. I wasn't given the option to stop...I was taken to the doctor the 1st of every month to get "my shot". I remember my mother paying the doctor in cash...$8, (small town doctor). Started at age 7 and ended shots at almost 18. Was then on oral pen VK for about 3 more years. I never got strep again, so it was effective. It wasn't meant as a treatment. I grew out of my SC (at least 95%) as I have posted on the forum before...had mainly tics, not much ocd. My "SC" was more like PANDAS, I believe. The shots are a great preventive, as compliance is 100%. But, I don't want to put my kids thru this, and pen doesn't hurt their stomachs. Both are on oral Pen VK, just starting back in September...no strep yet, hopefully this will prevent it. Latimer prefers Pen VK as a prophylactic.
