Inositol

Recommended Posts

We started our dd on Inositol - probably 5 days ago. I know that it is possibly too early to be seeing any signs of change for the better or for the worse, but for some reason she has gotten worse in the past 5 days. Specifically regressed 2 days after beginning Inositiol. She is also on 500 mg Zith per day and we had seen some improvment - although not tremendous yet. I really don't have anything else to contribute the regression to at this point being that the regression coincided with the beginning of Inositol.

Has anyone else experienced this? She is taking 1300 mg Inositol daily.

kcdc,

how long on the azith?

what symptoms did you feel were worse? what were her symptoms to begin with?

Re the inositol, I had tried it a long while back before looking at my son's issues from a PANDAS angle. I can say that I 'thought' his tics were increased after using it for a couple of days, maybe even the day after, don't recall. but being that I felt that there was an increase, I did not try it again, still have the jar in my cupboard and it was a good one given by our naturopath at the time.

If you want some more feedback on inositol, I'd post over on the tics/tourettes board, as more of those peeps have tried that supplement.

We've been on the azith 250 once a day for 30 days. We increased to 500 mg last week. Symptoms that were worse - the meltdowns, the OCD. To begin with she had the OCD, but we had seen a positive progression with that - not a whole lot - but some. The meltdowns had decreased significantly since being on the Zith. However, after the Inositol, meltdowns came back full force. The OCD was worse, also.

Did you titer up to 1300 mg over time or just start at that dose? Your target dose needs to be built up over the course of about 6 weeks. Aside from serious gas/diarrhea issues, I would not be surprised if starting out at a high dose caused unintended problems.

We had great success with inositol for a year. We only stopped after the anxiety issues were way under control. We started out at 400 mg for my 50 lb son and built up to 5 grams/day given 3 times per day (so at the start, it was 200 mg given twice a day for a total of 400 mg/day, then built up every 5 or 6 days until we got to 1.7 grams/dose X 3 times/day for a total of 5 grams). At the worst of times, I used it too and felt it helped me with my anxiety as well.

Every individual is different, but we found it very helpful. If you want to give it another try, I'd set your target dose and then devise a 6 week plan to get there. Dosing information can be found in one of these articles

Sorry - can't recall which. We only dosed to control anxiety, not OCD, as we were dealing mostly with tics and not OCD at the time.

We started at the 1300 mg dose per her doctor's instructions. I don't think 1300 mg is her target dose - I think he eventually wants to get it higher. I have continued with it despite the problems I saw over the weekend, and she seems to be leveling out now. Maybe it was just somewhat of a shock to her system? Not sure. Maybe it was something else. We were around a lot of family over the weekend - her immune system could have been triggered in some way that had nothing to do with Inositol.
