CSP Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Hi everyone, Son had the T&A last week Tues. Recovery is going well he was up by Sun. Eating is still a little painful, but he went all day today with out any pain med. So this is what happened... Tues, Wed. and Thurs. he had no tics at all. By Fri. we started to hear the kissing sound he use to make when he was around 8 or 9yo. Vocals started to come back Sun. He has been on Amox. and was given Keflex IV during surgery. Keflex is the ABX that seemed to help his tics decrease in the summer. We followed up with ENT today and told him about the 3 days of no tics, and said son's explation was... he did not think about them during those 3 days. ENT said it was a neuro problem. (humm????) He is breathing through his nose, something he has not been able to do. He can't open his mouth very wide and his tongue is kind of a black color. Doc. said his breath would smell, but that has not happened yet. Other then that Dr. said his tonsils were a lot larger then he thought. Should I be on the look out for anything else? Thanks for the support, CP
thereishope Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 The breath will start to eventually smell. My son did awesome with his surgery. Didn't really even need pain meds immediately afterwards, but then when it closer to the week mark, he started to feel sore. So, if he starts to hurt again, give him pain meds. Push the liquids and let him eat what he wants. Remind me, was your son diagnosed with a tic disorder and you stopped going down the PANDAS path? I'm interested in the Keflex and it's connection to the decrease in tics. Everyone is dismissing it, huh? I wouldn't. I would explain the connection to your ped or neurologist and ask them to write out a longer script for it. Some PANDAS kids have had success with Keflex. If tics decrease with any abs, that a sign of PANDAS! One should not dismiss that. Sometimes it's just the case of finding the right antibiotic and being on for a long enough time. If he had a tic disorder, wouldn't the tics be involuntary? Why would he have to "think about it" in order for the tics to occur? Is he currently on any antibiotics or has the post surgery ones gone?
CSP Posted December 2, 2009 Author Report Posted December 2, 2009 Hi Vickie, He is DX TS and this past summer we were given an antibiotic for some bug bites he got, and it was Keflex. He had been on Antibiotics before (not keflex) and we never saw much of anything, it is hard with him because he does not tic when sick, so we always saw the vocals come back. Was it from stopping the abx or the illness was over, we are not sure. Yes, my husband and I were wondering why if he has TS he wouldn't have just changed the tic to something else if his throat hurt too much. He is not on Abx, after this 10 day supply is gone. My husband had tics growing up and that is why we have the TS DX. However my husband does not tic. He has a habit of calling me "Love" whan he talks to me. But he does not just tic. Thanks, cp
thereishope Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 A lot of parents have said that their children seem almost symptoms free while they are sick. The calm before the storm. I remember at least 2 kids that their most success was on Keflex.
faith Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 hi cp, so Keflex is the abx that you think might help? is he on it now post t&a? (that just sounds wrong.. ) or is that the one they did iv? basically you want to continue trying the Keflex? can you just convince the ENT or another of his docs to give you a month's worth to satisfy yourself? if he is post surgery, the abx cannot hurt, so maybe they will give you it, tell them your youngest has a sore throat now and you don't want to risk him getting an infection soon after the surgery. Faith
Debbie1 Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Hi CP - Glad you are through with the t&a. It must be a relief to have it over with. Do you have any words of advice for us (we are going through it with all 3 kids later this month)? Just a thought - is it possible that something in the pain medication he was taking controlled the tics as well? Debbie
