Guest Angela Shaw Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 For those of you who have tried or are doing higher dose Augmentin with success....did your children have high strep titers? We are trying the higher dose (2000mg) Augmentin and our daughter's titers were in the normal range. 60 for aso and 80 for dnase. Angela
Guest Angela Shaw Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Are you seeing results?? Well, Lilly has been on only 1000mg per day of regular Augmentin for 7 days. Yesterady i got a prescription for 2000mg per day though she did not prescribe the XR. I called in this morning with my concerns about too much clavulonic acid in the regular Augmentin and she just called back that she had called in a new prescription. At the 1000mg per day I was beginning to see changes in her just the last couple of days. Nothing huge but she's been able to play on the PC for hours, which she could not do before due to feeling the need to click the mouse over and over all the time. And her mood in general has improved. (with a couple difficult patches still) And she's done more little things, like bring her plate the kitchen after she eats and she slept one night in her room. Small changes. I'm hoping for quicker changes at this higher dose. I'll keep you updated.
bmom Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Hi PMom, We have been on high dose Augmentin for approx. 3 weeks now. Titers were very low and always have been. Hard to say as my son's symptoms have been on a roller coaster for the last couple of months, but I believe we are seeing good results.
P_Mom Posted November 21, 2009 Author Report Posted November 21, 2009 Brandi...nice to hear from you! So, how is your son doing? How do you feel about IVIG...and......did dr.K give you the high dose Aug? How high? I tried switching my kids to Augmentin (only 400 mg 2x day), but, I saw NO difference. In fact, they are flairing right now, but, I don't attribute it to the Augmentin (I don't think..it is a chewable with dye and Apartame...two things I don't usually let them have). I think it is exposure to illness...anyway, I put them both back on Pen Vk today because why have them on Aug. if it doesn't make a difference???? Perhaps the dose needs to be at the max for all these kids....I was just wondering if the higher dose Aug. only worked on kids with high titers....Like Sammy??? It makes a little more sense to me then...but, none of this makes sense to me anymore. I really don't know what to do anymore...IVIG...high dose Aug., PEX....steroids??? My younger son said to me the other day "Mom, I wish I was 3 again." I asked why. He said because "it was my funnest year ever, and, I wouldn't be doing these things." He has no idea how bad that breaks my heart and how desperately I am trying to help him....a little boy....shouldn't have a care in the world. Kelly
Worried_Dad Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Our son has shown a rise in ASO titers after each exacerbation, but we don't really know how high they went. He was down around 140 during waning periods, but above 200 after each overnight symptom explosion. Unfortunately, the lab where our original DAN doc sent the blood just considered anything over 200 as "off the scale" so we didn't get an actual number. Our son's last major exacerbation hit on March 29. A month prior to that (Feb), we had gotten an ASO titer just to see where it was and it was 143. Our new DAN doc did another ASO titer in September (probably long after it peaked and after 2 rounds of IVIG - would that lower it?) and it was still at 280. Not super high... but double what it had been prior to his exacerbation. Seems like the jump in ASO titer after each flare-up would be convincing, but most local docs have still blown it off because it's "not high enough" despite the increase from baseline. Sigh....
faith Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Kelly, yikes about the dye and aspartame, that's what Dr. L. gave us, the chewable. shoot, I don't want that crud. I kind of felt the childrens motrin chewable was maybe causing tic increase so now just using adult tablet. where did you get that script? why did you change to the augmentin, just to see? what kind of flair are you seeing? so far, its been a month on the 1000mg/day aug, and I can't say anything great is happening....nothing terrible, but I guess I'm feeling like thing would be the same if he wasn't on anything., don't really know. Faith
P_Mom Posted November 21, 2009 Author Report Posted November 21, 2009 Faith...thanks for putting the s in Apartame... We got the script from Dr. L also. Yes, we switched "just to see" if it would take care of his remaining symptoms....not!!! The most noticeable flair I am seeing is in my older son...which is not the norm and it is making me really uncomfortable. It started (with a chest cold) as sudden, frequent throat clearing.....which just stopped as fast as it started one day last week and is now replaced with a constant sniffing. A two quick sniffs every 10 secs. I have never seen him have this frequent of a tic....ever. It comes with no behavior changes at all like with strep....just a frequent sniff tic.....it is making me concerned 'cause I didn't think I had to worry about him. My younger son actually SEEMS to be doing better right now...which is unheard of. However, he has more of the "unnoticeable" increases..you know..the "hidden" stuff..like thoughts, ocd, temper...which is also elevated right now.......not horrible...I have to stress.....no where near how it was with strep for either. Worried Dad.......both of my sons ASO fluctuates with their increases....nothing "drastic" though.....like you described.....but it does correlate with their symptoms. Actually, the last time it was checked, my younger sons was 35 and my older sons was 85.....both were doing great at the time. Are the increases all strep exposure?? Can viruses cause a rise in this??? This is exhausting........
peglem Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 . Are the increases all strep exposure?? Can viruses cause a rise in this??? I would thing ASO titer increases could only be caused by strep, since its a measure of antibodies produced against a strep exotoxin. I wonder if its only produced by group A strep though?
