momtocole1 Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 My son started to complain of a sore throat last night. I looked in his throat and saw that his tonsils are swollen and his right tonsil has a white spot on it. We are going to the doctor this morning. His OCD symptoms and tics have been "through the roof" this weekend but some other good things happened so I was thinking it was a saw tooth type of healing that has started. He has been on the high dose Augmentin for one month, 1000 mg. 2x per day. Does it even make sense to have a rapid and culture? Won't it automatically read negative because he is on the Augmentin? Should I switch back to the Zithromax? We talk to Dr. K. tomorrow... Last night he just kept yelling for me to get the OCD out. He is doing OCD behaviors that have been gone for so long. It is like they are all jumbling together and cycling through very fast. Trying really hard not to panic. Thanks, Judy...
faith Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Judy, wow, dont' know how to put this, but I'm sort of glad that there might be a throat infection involved here, because at least it might explain whey he wasn't doing as well as you first thought on the high Augmentin, know what I mean? you think one tonsil looks swollen? is it red? Is is a pus spot? cause sometimes they could have a tonsil stone or it could even be food stuck in the crypts, that is common. but yay that he let you look! if he says its sore, I'm sure there's something to it. now it might show negative, but that doesn't rule out viral, remember antibioitics have no effect on viral. not all sore throats have to be strep. and even if it is viral, our kids are older remember and have been dealing with this a while now, so viral illness can trigger some antibody response and muck things up a bit. I think there's always some residual antibodies hanging around (remember "waiting for a hook up", ? lol) so this could have got them to come running. think "infection triggered', not necessarily just strep at this point. Dr. L. did say to me that it could just take that first strep infection to start it all, and then any subsequent illnes could add to it. something like that. Now I just don't know who you would treat the sore throat if its viral? I'll let the others here advise you on that. but I'd say go to the doctor anyway just to make sure what you;re dealing with. good luck, Faith
faith Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 oh I was thinking, how about a 10 day course of Olive Leaf Extract? I don't know exactly how this works, but I was inquiring yesterday at the Vit shop and they told me that it doesn't necessarily prevent virus, but once the antibodies have responded to illness, it can snuff it out faster? I was thinking it could prevent virus, but he said no, that this helps to boost the immune system, so in other words, might help snuff out the illness faster and it won't be as bad? I think that's whay I got from it. I know some use it here as anti-viral, so maybe they could advise on that. Faith
thereishope Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Hopefully it is not strep. When my tonsils get a white spot on it, it's usually food stuck. I know that sounds so gross, but I had tonsilitis a lot as a kid so they are probably scared w/ caverns in them. It can take weeks for it to go away.Anyway, when that happens, it can feel sore. Even my neck and ear can feel affected. So, if the strep test comes back negative, also try to get him to gargle with salt water or eat something like potato chips that might knock the food out. Ibruprofen helps with sore throats too, in addition ot the benefits it has with PANDAS symptoms. Do get a strep test, though. Let us know how the appt goes.
Debbie1 Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Judy, So sad for you that things have to be so hard right now. Please let us know how the appointment goes. Good luck with Dr. K tomorrow. Debbie
lismom Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Judy, So sad for you that things have to be so hard right now. Please let us know how the appointment goes. Good luck with Dr. K tomorrow. Debbie We are on full strength zithromax and my son just got over H1N1. His increase of symptoms has now happened after he has recovered. Like some have said, all it takes is virus and the antibodies will mimic what they have known before and therefore we all takes steps backward. That is where we are right now with my son. Our main thing is tics. The one thing I have to say the flare up is not as severe as before, none the less disappointing. Kathy
momtocole1 Posted November 17, 2009 Author Report Posted November 17, 2009 Uhhh, Rapid strep was negative. I guess it is just a viral thing. I have lost all objectivity here. My son is decompensating before our eyes. Screaming out, like full blown tourettes, afraid to leave the house. Screaming at me and crying and begging me to get the OCD out of his head. We had a culture done also just in case. I think it may be a food particle that is stuck (you pegged it Faith and Vickie) We also did a culture of my littlest son who has Down syndrome, that was so tough. He is tiny for his age. 7 years old and only 35 pounds and wears size 3T! He is a peanut but it took a doctor, two nurses, me and his older PANDAS brother to pin him down to pry open his mouth. He has super human strength. I just feel so sad about all this going on. His tonsils are absolutely huge, but not infected. I don't know why I'm talking about him, that is a whole other forum! Just venting I guess. I made 4 trips to the drug store today to try to get Ryan's steroid burst. It was a comedy of errors. We started it tonight. Please wish me luck... We are going to need, I so hope that it will lessen his OCD and tic symptoms so that he can breathe again. Thanks for putting up with my near panic attack. I have lost all perspective. I actually believe most people I come into contact with now have PANDAS! I saw a store clerk flip her hair today, and I thought, oh yeah, PANDAS. I need some serious help! I know that is no joke but I am looking through a very distorted lense right now... thanks, Judy...

thereishope Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 My neighbor had a kid over that through a terrible meltdown/tantrum when he had to leave. I found myself whispering under my breathe..."I'd get him a strep test". Then I went in and sterilized our bat he touched. I saw a store clerk flip her hair today, and I thought, oh yeah, PANDAS.
