FLUNKING 7TH GRADE

So I don't want my son to flunk school. It's not so much his grades as it is his absences that are the problem. The district just wants these very specific rules and times and dates for everything to be over. Like we can wrap PANDAS up in this neat little box!!! My son at first didn't go to his early classes because of the huge sleep disorder. But was going at 4th hour (out of 7) so more than half a day. He now refuses to go. Some of it is anxiety, he feels like he's been out too long to get caught up, people will ask questions, his seat changed, more OCD kind of stuff. Goes into the huge fits of rage when he doesn't want to get up and go.

 

What do you guys do? If you don't have a stay home parent how do you cope? How do you deal with your other kids lives? I emailed these same questions to Dr. K, we'll see if he answers. By the way we are 8 days post IVIG for the first time. Getting ready to go on an ADD medicine to help with the learning too.

My child attends a private school for special needs children so our situations are quite different. However, I think it may be time for you to have a discussion with the school about modifying things to accommodate his medical needs. I wonder how he would do with online classes? Many states offer online charter schools...just a thought. If work means there would be nobody home supervising during the day, then that's a whole other issue.

Can you get the absences excused (doctor's notes)? In our school district there is a big difference between excused absences and unexcused absences. You should talk to the school, maybe get an IEP (PANDAS counts as OHI).

I would do whatever can be done, and in the end, even if he does fall behind a year, that's OK too. I know it can be hard at that age to see your friends move on and your left behind, but sometimes it works better that way. I think you can discuss this with him and see how he feels about it and what he is willing to do. I know when they are in an exacerbation period they really can't help themselves, but for the most part I see my 6th grade PANDAS child can pull himself together if the motivation is strong (ie., no screen time until your school work is done!) It's hard to determine sometimes where the line is. Last night he was just going around in circles and I could tell it was going to be a long night if I played his little game (he keeps asking if this ok or that is ok, and whether or not he should go to the bathroom and wash AGAIN, etc.) I was very tired because we have sick kids and he has had up the last couple of nights. My husband wasn't home and I was feeling horrible. I told him to go to bed and that if I had to get up on his account he would loose all screen time for five days... Guess what, even though his sister just tested positive for strep and he is defninitely out of sorts, he managed to stay in bed and have a good night sleep!

 

Just my two cents, hope you can work something out with the school!
