Ok - here's a question for all of you: My daughter recently had a mild cold, missed 2 days of school, developed nasty clusters of cold sores on the end/inside/and under her nose...looks like about 6 of them all together, honey colored and crusty (gross, I know). Then we saw a backslide in behaviors for about 10 days and she's getting better now and sores are disappearing. The same thing happened to her over the spring, then horrible behaviors occurred and it took FOREVER for those nose sores to go away. This time, because she has beenon Azithro they went away pretty fast.

I spoke with Dr. K about this and he thought it could be impetigo caused by strep, not cold sores. Another Mom also told me her daughter has had 3 small bouts of impetigo on her daughter's nose as well.

Has anyone else seen this with their child? Just makes me nuts to see that this strep is oozing out of my kid at just about every orafice!!

when my son had first pandas episode, he had a terrible mouth rash. our useless ped at the time suggested steroid cream - totally not seeing connection or looking for root cause. it was not impetigo like, but as i now look at pics, possibly mild herpes. he was also doing much shirt chewing at the time so everyone would write it off as a by-product of that but i didn't think it was. it would flair and go down. one time he had it running up to his nose when he didn't have a runny nose.

2nd pandas episode, he had a runny nose and a red line under his bottom lip a week before behaviors surfaced.

he is on a homeopathic treatment now and when we've added a new element, i've seen a mild face rash flair - around his mouth and often on his cheeks also.

i don't know what it all means but believe it is definitely related.

sounds like impetigo--bactroban ointment will clear it right up it is a prescription though/

Dear Coco,

I feel like I could write a book on impetigo. The sores you are talking about really, really sound like impetigo. It starts out itchy for them and my son tells me that the skin is tingling, and then this very red sore appears. The sore or sores look like a very perfect circle on my sons mouth. Then they turn a honey color and they look like they have these lines across the sore from left to right that look almost like a scrape. They sometimes ooze just a little bit, sorry I know this sounds so gross. My son, when he gets them cannot stop opening his mouth as wide as he can and it cracks them open again and prevents healing. He also will lick the sore, it kills me. It becomes a new tic!

Once I finally got one cleared up on one side of his mouth and then the next day another showed up on the other side. I almost screamed when I saw it because I could not believe it. He really looked like a clown that had two red circles painted on either side of his mouth. They are usually about the size of a dime. I have tried neosporin, bactroban, even went to a dermo and got a steriod cream, that did not help all all, it just irritated the heck out of it and made him fuss with it even more. Now I now more and the only thing that clears it up for him is oral antibiotics.

I just know after reading so much on this forum that my son has a nasty strep infection SOMEWHERE in his body!

I really think it is an immunity issue now and I think that the skin has been so broken down there that he is now really suceptible (sp) to these sores. I had one cultured recently and they did not show strep on the lab report. But my ped said that there is never enough on the skin to show a positive result. What did show up on the lab report was candida albicans. That is yeast right??? They never even called me to tell me those results. Do you think it is because we all have yeast on our skin? I still have so much to learn.

Thanks, I hope that helped a little.

Do these sores sound similar to the ones your daughter go under her nose? I feel for you and for her...

Wow, my son was chewing his shirts too. It was when he first got strep and I believe PANDAS, but I did not know about PANDAS then. It was 5 years ago. He would chew his shirts in the first grade so much that the ribbed collar that was around the t shirt would be completely torn away. He would run out of his class at the end of the day and his shirt would be completely soaked up front.

What is really strange is now that we just started the high dose Augmentin he has started to chew his shirts a little again. Not anything like before. It is like he is replaying some of his old OCD behaviors and tics. It is like on rewind a little. It is so strange to watch.

Thanks,

Judy....

Seeing old PANDAS symptoms resurface as they recover happens. Like you said, you're watching them in rewind.

I don't know if it might be herpes. I get them a lot, and my miracle remedy is Oil of Oregano. As soon as I feel the tingling, I know it's coming, and usually there was not much I could do about it. But now I put OoO on it, full strenght, a couple of times a day, and they usually don't even erupt, the just go away. Oil of Oregano is good for viruses, bacteria, and yeast, so I think it would help no matter what the rash is. It is very strong and it might burn (besides tasting horrible), so for a child, particularly on the face, you could just use one drop OoO to 1 tsp. olive oil.

Also, if it is herpes, a big trigger is the sun (avoid it around mid-day or use sunscreen, especially on the lips) and the other one is wind, especially on a cold, dry day.

Hope this helps!

they sort of do. of course, as soon as I heard "impetigo" I googled pics of it -- freaked out a little because those people look like they live in third world countries it is sooooo bad! -- sorry! But I found one that was of just a nose, and it looked like my daughter's. it's interesting you mention yeast...i was thinking about starting her on some oil of oregano for a month, then switching to garlic oil for the next month and rotating to help with possible yeast. i will ask her immuno about this as well. i also have a lot to learn! I'm beginning to think my kid even has strep in her hair!!

hi Judy. chewing on shirts is also listed as a yeast behavior. most of my son's behavior were what many consider how yeast presents in autistic kids. in fact, that's what i was investigating when we discovered it was pandas. i'm not sure how - but i think somehow yeast and strep are linked even without yeast developing from abx b/c he hadn't been on abx for about 2.5 years when all this surfaced. my theory is that the strep is in the gut and that dysbiosis allows/causes yeast overgrowth.

the wet shirts are ridiculous! my son would have a completely wet shirt - at times, we would just tell him to wear no shirt. he just couldn't seem to stop. last week, he was wearing a half-zip fleece and kind of chewing on the zipper. i think it was b/c it was close to his mouth. i haven't seen it again. i hate that stomach-drop when you see a previous behavior that's been gone!

i believe someone also posted about how her daughter had pandas but not confirmed strep, but confirmed herpes - i think. it's all related somehow. my son's mouth rash didn't really look like impetigo, more like mild but spreading herpes. nothing topical seemed to help. it didn't seem to bother him except that he was chewing on shirts so maybe he did feel something.
