bmom Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 I was just wondering if PEX will help with Pitandas a well. I know my son started with PANDAS, but I believe it has moved to PITANDAS. Does PEX remove only strep antibodies or the mis behaving ones in general?
KeithandElizabeth Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 I thought that once you had PANDAS, anything can cause an increase in symptoms. Dr. K told us the flu or any other virus would cause a flare up. Is your son still on antibiotics? Have you checked for strep, both with a swab and the ASO titers? I would consider doing the immunological work up as well. How is your son doing now? elizabeth
bmom Posted October 12, 2009 Author Report Posted October 12, 2009 Thanks for the quick response. He is doing ok. When he got the flu a few weeks ago, things flared again. The settled for about a week and now he is blinking again. I dont know why. He is usually on 500 mg of Augmentin, but is currently on 1000 mg. I have had him tested several times for strep this month and is negative on rapid and culture. He does not seem sick right now, but perhaps is having allergies. Dr. K says lets hope it is just a bump in the road and to wait and see. That is my plan, but I always like to have a back up plan!

He went into pretty big detail about it, but it all made great sense. coco

EAMom Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Fifth Disease Symptoms Fifth disease usually starts with a mild vague illness. Fever occurs 15%-30% of the time, along with nasal congestion and drainage, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches, and a headache. This lasts for several days. Then, seven to 10 days later, the characteristic facial rash (the slapped cheeks rash) develops abruptly. Typically, the facial rash is bright red. The child looks as if a hand has slapped across his or her face. This rash fades in four days. A light pink rash begins on the arms and spreads to the trunk, buttocks, and thighs. This gradually fades to a lacelike pattern, then clears.
bmom Posted October 12, 2009 Author Report Posted October 12, 2009 EAmom, Did you just let things ride out both times or do steroids?
amy s Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Hi there bmom- I believe our children had IVIg around the same time last year. I have a question for both you and EAMOM- regarding symptom exacerbation related to flu. How long did it take for pandas symptom exacerbation after onset of flu symptoms? I ask because on Friday my dd came down with flu symptoms. So far she has not had any pandas symptoms but I am scared to peices that she will. Thanks! Regards, amy s
KeithandElizabeth Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 I would have your son do the immunological work up. Maybe he needed more than one round of IVIG. If his immunological work up is normal, then maybe PEX would be more helpful. If there is a deficiency with his immune system, I don't believe PEX addresses the deficiency. Just some thoughts.... Elizabeth
bmom Posted October 13, 2009 Author Report Posted October 13, 2009 My sons PANDAS symptoms started 3 -4 days before the sickness hit. So, hopefully you are in the clear!
thereishope Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 My son has the flu and even though his fever spiked to 105 w/ Motrin AND Tylenol, his PANDAS symptoms did not resurface, that was such a sigh of relief because we've experienced resurfacing of symptoms w/ a cold and allergies before. He got sick on Sat. Hi there bmom- I believe our children had IVIg around the same time last year. I have a question for both you and EAMOM- regarding symptom exacerbation related to flu. EAMom Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 I noticed the symptom exacerbation 8 days after the onset of the flu (a few days after recovery). This was all before she had IVIG so, maybe that would make a difference.
