acdrobert Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Hello - I went to the natural foods store today to get a new probiotic. The very nice and knowledgeable owner there told me about Kal Daycare Defense. It is for small children but you can give it up to 3 x a day for older ones (Thomas is 8) What caught my eye was that it had 5 million viable organisms but also 20 IgG immunoglobulins from colostrum. Thomas is adopted from an orphanage in Russia so I seriously doubt he was breast fed and got colostrum. Has anybody tried it. oh...and no strep in the probiotic mix ! quote name='dee45' date='Sep 4 2009, 06:42 AM' post='37278'] Hi, what is the right amount of probiotics for a child on antibiotics? what brands does everyone use?? Just a warning for anyone who is trying to avoid dairy that when I checked into this the colostrum was DAIRY.
chrisw Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I have been researching bovine colostrum and think I have decided to give it a try. It has a bunch of immunoglobulins (IGG, IGA, IGM) in it which are evidently the same whether from a cow or human. Go figure. My son's IGG1 subclass is below normal and his IGG3 is on the low end of normal, so I don't think it can hurt. From what I have read, it is not classified as a drug, but a food so it supposedly has no side effects. Here is a VERY informative website (I don't know how to do a link) all about colostrum. It is www.icnr.org. I just want to do all I can to protect my son through this school year. I'll let you all know what I think when we try it. Christie
NancyD Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 We have been taking 4Life Transfer Factor for years and I swear by it! My daughter gets 3 capsules 2x daily and when we see the slightest bit of a cold I increase her dosage and also give her 6 capsules of Querciplex. Between the two it can really nip the cold completely or shorten its lifespan to 2-3 days. I don't take it daily but I do take it (and Querciplex) if I feel a cold coming on. Transfer Factor is made from bovine colostrum. Nancy I have been researching bovine colostrum and think I have decided to give it a try.
thereishope Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Where they are getting all this colostrum from? I mean it's only present for a few days and there's not much when it is being produced. Are the cows getting hormones or something? I don't think it could be human. Women just don't produce enough. With my first son, he was premature and I pumped milk for him. I got one ounce of colostrum on the day he was born and the nurses were amazed by that amount. That was a lot.
mama2alex Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 My son is on 2 Lacto-Tri Blend per day, plus Nystatin. Our DAN doc also recommended Primal Defense (one a day), but the tablets are big and smell bad, so I only have him to take one when I think he needs extra. He's also on an extremely low sugar diet (since age 3) due to yeast overgrowth that seems to affect his behavior and attention. If others are doing a low sugar diet, I found a natural sugar substitute called XyloSweet, which I use for baking. Whole Foods has it in their supplement section. For those who don't know, sugar feeds yeast, so a low sugar diet helps prevent overgrowth.

It's bovine cow colostrum. Evidently they can only get it right after or soon after calving.
