melanie Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Dan woke with a bad headache what is this about he finished the iV last night
lss Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 That is normal with the IVIG. Dr. K told me to give Motrin at as soon as possible when my son complained of headache after IVIG. It should go away with the Motrin, if not, you need to tell the Dr. Linda Dan woke with a bad headache what is this about he finished the iV last night
NancyD Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Hi Melanie, First, GREAT news that you were able to get coverage for the IVIG! I hope this is as successful for your son as it has been for my daughter. There are a few key things to keeping the headaches away: Before IVIG 1. Always be sure your son eats a meal and drinks lots of water before starting the IVIG 2. Be sure they give him Motrin and Benedryl before administering the IVIG. Motrin is better than Tylenol because Tylenol lowers the glutathione levels. During IVIG 3. Drink LOTS of water during the IVIG (I make my daughter drink ~ 16 oz per hour) After IVIG 4. Following the IVIG drink LOTS of water for a few days (I give my daughter a water bottle wherever she is) 5. Give Motrin every 6 hours for 3 days following the IVIG 6. If the headache is bad I also give Benedryl Hope this helps! Keep us posted on how Dan does. Nancy Dan woke with a bad headache what is this about he finished the iV last night

Thanks I did give him advil he seems better should I just give it to him just in case I called the md he hasnt called back yet My dd now receives IVIG monthly because of immune problems--what I've learned from those who have been receiving IVIG monthly for years is that they continue to do both the Motrin & Benadryl for up to two days afterwards to help with side effects.

The monthly iv's are they 1 day? how many hrs?
ShaesMom Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 The monthly iv's are they 1 day? how many hrs? Yes, monthly IVIG is for one day. The hours depends on each individual (weight, dosage, & how fast the infusion rate is). Shae's take about 4 hours. Some individuals receive what is called SubQ instead of the monthly IVIG. The Subq is given at home, I believe weekly, and is done using several needles subcutatously rather than through an IV.

ShaesMom Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 I don't know the dosage for a child that size-mine weighs 41 lbs. You can alternate between motrin and tylenol. Tylenol can be given 2-3 hours after the motrin. I got an RX for Imitrex for my daughter.

I wonder if Excedrin for migraines would work--the caffine wouldn't help his sleeping issues though.
