I have a 12 yr old son who has been on zith for 2 1/2 months. I believe his undiagnosed strep had gone very deep into my sons system because we were dealing with tics but the bigger problem was extreme fatigue. To make a long story short, my son improved. With a strict diet and the zith we were almost at 95%. However, over a week ago he started to have diarrhea. I immediately saw small signs that things were going to get worse. At that same time I let him eat some things I normally wouldn't because it seemed like he was doing better. His tics have gotten bad again.

My big question is anyone dealing with both. I know that something happened were he couldn't eat what ever he wanted anymore because he reacted to it but I also saw some improvement on the zith.

I unfortunately wasn't going to go to a prophylactic dose so soon but with his stomach issues I feel I have to. I have cried all morning unbelieving that I am right at the beginning again.

Any imput would help. Thanks Kathy

Kathy,

You say he WAS on a strict diet and then he started eating things that you hadn't let him eat in the past. First thing you should do is look at the recent diet changes. He is eating more of the big allergens-wheat, dairy, peanut?? Try going back to your original more strict diet and see if after three days the diarrhea goes away. If so, you are likely looking at food allergy or intolerance. An easy way to test this is go back to the more lax diet after a week or two of being diarrhea free and see what happens.

It is also possible that he picked up some sort of virus that is causing the diarrhea and tics.

I think the diarrhea was possibaly from the antibiotics. Because what ever meal after he took the dose he was having problems. The lapse in diet was a few days after that started. I let him have fries and a lemon icy at our local icecream shop because I thought he was so much better but he came home and had loose stool. He has been on dietary restriction from back in Feb'09. The tics then picked up about 4 days later. Kathy...

Kathy,

I have asked very similar questions regarding my son. He improved to almost 100% on azith, then we moved. During the moving he had no dietary changes and remained on all his supplements. However things worsened and all I can guess is that while the stress of moving may have played a role, environmental allergens definately triggered his tics and continue to do so. Sorry I don't have any helpful advice, but just wanted to add that I have always wondered how the tics could have improved so dramatically on azith only to worsen on azith when only his environment changed? Only other thought I have is to make sure you are using probiotics with the azith. I hope things settle down soon!

Kathy,

I agree with the probiotics, just make sure you don't give at the same time as the antibiotics. As for the enviromental toxins; We moved from Florida to Texas 2 yrs ago, and I asked our new peds dr. how long it takes for people to adjust to the new enviroment after you move-she said it normally takes people about 1 year for your body to adjust to the new environment.
