kim
From Stephenson, Joan, "Strep A, Neuropsychiatric Disorders Tie Found," JAMA, Vol 287, No. 7., p. 828 (2002) [Report on findings presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy by Michael Pichichero, MD, of the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY.]: "During a 3-year period (1998-2001), Pichichero and Marie Lynd Murphy, MD,of the Elmwood Pediatric Group in suburban Rochester, identified 12 children who were experiencing a first episode of neuropsychiatric symptoms that met PANDAS criteria.... when asoxon posted this on "potty issues" thread, I thought "Pichichero" was a name i recognized form another article regarding strep pneumo vaccine being at least partially responsible for a highly antibiotic resistant bacteria causing ear infections. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...toryId=15353598 New Stubborn Ear Infection Resistant to Drugs What was found in Rochester was worrying for two counts: it was a very, very resistant of strep pneumo. And it was a strain that was not covered by the vaccine," says Dr. Elizabeth Bancroft of the Los Angeles County Health Department. She's referring to a strep pneumo vaccine introduced seven years ago. It protects against seven different strains. It's greatly reduced the incidence of pneumococcal infections in children. But researchers had predicted that by suppressing the most common strains, the vaccine would open the door to new ones like the 19-A Rochester bug. and That's why Pichichero is warning fellow pediatricians to be alert to ear infections that don't go away. The fear is hearing loss —- or worse, that the infection might go to the lung or brain, although that's not happened. Pichichero suggests children with the symptoms go through an ear tap, which involves sticking a needle through the child's eardrum to withdraw a sample of fluid. It's fast and doctors say it doesn't hurt much, but it's scary for kids, who have to be strapped down. And Pichichero says many doctors don't like to do it. Dr. Pichichero is highly involved in vaccine research http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/smd/mbi/faculty/pichichero.htm Dr. Pichichero has played a role in the clinical and/or translational research leading to licensure of many vaccines including acellular pertussis vaccines (DTaP), combination vaccines (DTaP-Hib-polio and DTaP-Hepatitis B-polio), meningococcal conjugate vaccine, Rotavirus vaccine, Human papillomavirus vaccine, adolescent Tdap vaccines and othersI found it somewhat comforting (does cause me to be a little suspicious though) to think that this man was involved in PANDAs research. It did lead me to wonder (i'm not as well acquainted with all of the PANDAs research as i would like to be) what "other" antigens had N acetylglucosamine as a surface component, which has been found to be cross reactive in PANDAS. I feel strongly that my 2nd son had a reaction to his birth Hep B vaccine. I watched this child flayl his head all around with his mouth open. He acted so strange that the thought "this baby needs to be seen by a neurologist" ran through my mind. No one in my family had ever been to a neurologist. None of my friends had either that I was aware of, so where I even came up with that thought is kind of weird. Anyway, looking at this bolding mine http://vir.sgmjournals.org/cgi/reprint/36/1/207.pdf Carbohydrate Composition. of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen The content and composition of carbohydrate in hepatitis B surface antigenHB~Ag) were clarified by gas chromatography. A value of 75"8/zg carbohydrate per nag of protein was obtained. The main components were N-acetylglucosamine, mannose, galactose and sialic acid and the minor one was fucose. No N-acetylgalactosamine was detected. I guess I'm wondering if anyone has any has any research documenting PANDAS symptoms in relationship to other antigens? Also, could the strep pneumoniae vaccines be reactive in PANDAS kids?
lss
Kim, Dr. K told me that they know that Hep B can cause some Panda sysmptoms. My son's tics started after receiving the Hep A and the varicella shots, about 2 weeks after. Linda
thereishope
Is the vaccine you are referring to Prevnar? If so, my son had the course of that vaccine and I never noticed reactions to them.
