Suzan Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Anyone know if canker sores can be caused by strep? My internet searches all say canker sores aren't contagious but I don't believe it. My dd (7) has one right now and I have one now too. I always thought they were caused by a virus of some sort. I'm assuming it's related to why they are both having trouble right now. But I am the one who failed to get her swabbed last week at the doctor. Susan

Susan I don't have the articles saved, but have read research linking gum sores & periodontal problems with magnesium deficiency. Just a thought.
Caryn Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Cancer sores (gum boils, mouth ulcers) are a sign of immune deficiency. You have lowered immunity. It is viral and points to probable nutrient deficiencies and the presence of stress. Prior to the pyroluria dx and finding out about genetic celiac, cancer sores were quite common in our house too. There is a definite imbalance there if it is constantly reoccurring. I believe in addition to low magnesium stores it has also been tied to iron. I know that is a common symptom for a celiac prior to diagnosis and gluten free diet. Try taking some immune boosting supps and see if it helps lessen the duration.

Susan Prior to my daughters diagnosis she used to get canker sores all the time...and until I read your post I never would have made the connection -we were buying new toothbrushes/mouthwashes every week and just couldnt figure out how they kept coming back. I dont know if they are contagious or not , but my daughter certainly had them often enough yet no one else did....She rarely presented with traditional symptoms of strep, her "infections" were mostly in her ears. I can only ever remember her having two incidents of "throat infections" hmmm sounds suspicious.................. take care and good luck
EAMom Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Our pediatric rheumatologist did say that certain things (nose picking, teeth cleaning at the dentist, tooth extraction) could allow strep from the mouth/throat to enter the bloodstream. I suppose this could also hold true for a canker sore?
