I heard today of someone who went to California and saw Dr. Goldberg and is following the NIDS protocol (neuroimmune protocal) with antivirals. Anyone else here trying the NIDS approach? http://www.nids.net/nidsfaq.htm

It seems so closely related to what our PANDAS kids are experiencing with immune disfunction. I have been on the yahoo group for NIDS but wondered if anyone has been successful with it? It is all about cooling down the brain/immune system with diet, antivirals, antifungals and then increasing bloodflow to the brain with SSRIs. I thought it was worth discussing here.

I saw Pat mentioned the NIDS protocal today and wanted to bring this up again since nobody replied on it last time. This approach is being used for kids like ours with immune issues and PANDAS and PITANDS. It is about fixing the gut issuues and healing the blood flow to the brain. Has anyone tried this protocal? Someone I know who is using it for a child with Autism said they are showing signs of improvement. I think it was M. Carol that told me about this awhile ago. It has groups that follow it on Yahoo.

I've looked at this a little more closely and the only concern I have is that they tend to use a lot more meds rather than a natural approach. I think that the idea behind it is good and it is very close to what many of us here on this site have said about healing the gut. I'm just not sure I want to use SSRI's and some of the anti-fungals. There's such a fine line between helping and making things worse. I feel a little safer with the natural things (like substituting inositol for SSRI's for instance). What I am glad to see, though, is that there seems to be more and more activity with people from all different areas researching this problem (neuro-immune dysfunction) and trying various approaches. Eventually somebody is going to come up with something that really works.
