Vaccines

My teen just came home from the doctor, and came out with "recommendations" for 3 vaccines! Honestly, I thought we were done. They are for meningococcal meningitis, Hepatitis A, and MMR. Anyone else out there with older kids. I am pretty sure these weren't on the list a few years ago (maybe the meningitis was, but not the MMR or Hep A). Then, my husband came home and told me his doctor wanted him to get a whooping cough vaccine. The doctor said he didn't need it to protect him, but if he (my husband) got it, he could spread it to an infant, which could be bad for the infant (we do not have an infant).

Comments???? What would you do about the teen vaccines? I only want to give what is absolutely necessary because, in our case, we never know what will cause the symptoms to flare.

emma,

It is going on 3 years since my son had 2 vaccines in one day, 6 wees later he exploded in tics. While we were there the Dr. said to my son "You won't need any more shots until you're 20yo.

I will never let him have another shot again, as long as he is in my care. I think the CDC will always find another vaccine to give our children.

Back when the couple (Frank) who had the 1yo and that baby was given 3 vaccines. They were not the same vaccines my children got at 1yo.

Hi Emma,

A quick reply...we just came home yesterday from our visit to Chicago to see dr.K. I will post someday soon about it, but, right now, very busy. In a nutshell, I can not say enough about him. I left there pleasantly surprised (he was nothing like the picture I painted in my head of him after working and speaking with him for the past year)...anyway, I left there feeling really good instead of crappy like I have left many docs offices this year. He understood!! He actually said to me..."I understand your anxiety." I wanted to give him a big kiss because all the docs I saw this year looked at me like I was crazy. Anyway, about vaccines...this was one doctor who was very careful about vaccines...and he is a regular pediatric doctor. He doesn't do the flu vaccines, says they are worthless...he doesn't do the infant vaccine (I think it is the Hep vaccine), says timing and dosing of vaccines should be different than they are to avoid possible complications...basically he says it is "all about money." This, finally, from a mainline doc who doesn't give in to the "profession's rules." Anyway, my point, (we are PANDAS).....he said "no viral vaccines " for my kids.

emma,

Check out this ad for adacel....the one that they are pushing on the adults now and was recommended for the 6th time for my sons last year (declined). Can you imagine the $$$$ involved in giving this vax to everyone every 5 yrs? How many cases of supposed asthma are now going to be called pertussis ? How many cases of so called asthma really were pertussis in the past? How well has this vaccine ever worked?

Notice the statement under the 2nd picture

It is unknown whether immunizing adolescents and adults against pertussis will reduce the risk of transmission to infants.

This link will give you the ingredients

They gave my Dad and my sister this vaccine when they were stung by bees with some horrendous ficticious # about the cases of tetanus and how it can be acquired through bee stings. I don't know if the number was from every case ever recorded in every 3rd world country (where they still pack umbilical cords with dirt) or what, but it certainly was not from cases in the US. I was furious. They are giving it to kids who have had their last one less than 10 years ago (tetanus componenet). I am probably much more at risk for tetanus than my boys. Young people with healthy circulation are not as susceptable as older people and I haven't had a tetanus shot in ages. I don't plan on getting any either!

Hopefully I'll have time to get back to you with some Hep A and meningitis info, or maybe you have time seach/ post some.

The only way I know to make an informed choice regarding vaccines, is to do the homework. You have to weigh the risk/potential reward for each and make the best choice you can, taking into consideration YOUR PARTICULAR FAMILY CIRCUMSTANCES and history. So much of what we are told is SO misleading.

I hate to be repetive, but is it really as easy as requesting a form to decline vaccines? Do you all claim religious reasons? I just heard my sons school district is demanding chicken pox vaccine this year within the first 2 weeks. No thanks- I believe we are good!!!!

I think it depends on the state which exemptions you can claim. Here in AZ there is a personal belief exemption. It is not advertised and the school nurses still send out statements that children cannot attend without vaccines. But, as soon as I ask for the exemption paperwork, they don't hassle me anymore. They do tell me (as though this would be a huge deal) that if the school has an outbreak of one of those diseases, I'll have to keep my child home.

here is a site with info on exemptions:

I've been wondering the same thing bmom. i know there are some states that accept the philosophical exemption, but unfortunately where we are now (SC) is NOT one of them. Only medical and religious. So for those of you in states like this, what DO you do? Also bmom, i don't THINK that varicella vac is mandatory. At least it's not here in SC and they seem to be very strict on keeping shots up to date. They say it's highly recommended to have the booster at 4-6 years of age but NOT mandatory for school. My daughter SHOULD be getting the second MMR, DTaP, and who knows what else. there are a couple more that are apparently mandatory. however no one has said anything to me yet.......maybe we'll slip through the cracks while i can get the titer thing figured out.

does anyone know.....will doctors fill out a medical exemption for you? would i have better luck seeing an environmental dr to do that?

My understanding is that it is very difficult to get a medical exemption across the board, even from a DAN Dr. You may be able to get one for a particular vaccine for a period of time, but not one that will exempt medically indefinitely. Personally, I feel a religious exemption is the best way to go, if you are not in a state where they are drilling parents, sometimes in front of a "panel" regarding their beliefs, which I thought was totally illegal. I have read in several places that religious beliefs were not to be questioned, nor should you volunteer any info in that area. Just a brief statement like " Due to our strictly held religious beliefs, we are opting out of the vaccination program at this time. " The child's name etc. has to be included. You can use the link that someone posted here, to get the form from your state, and change the format to something that you are more comfortable with. Our state form says something like, "I understand that not vaccinating is placing my child and others at risk." This is a statement that I would NOT sign, but would use some of the language from the state letter as a guide, if I were filing philosophical.

My boys records were checked when entering Jr. High and High school, which happened for both boys last year. We JUST made it, without having to file. We had just a couple of months before the TdaP was required. It will not be checked this year as a 7th grader and sophomore. If the 2nd varicella is mandatory, we will be flagged tho, and the dreaded note will come home. I should get our exemption in place too.

I think a philosophical exemption is easier in states that allow it, but if the "powers that be," have their way and philosophical exemptions are no longer accepted in the future, my feeling is that religious exemptions may be grandfathered in (possibly).

Talk about human rights violations. If I had a daughter that was being required to complete the Gardisil series (HPV vaccine) I have no doubt, I would be sitting in jail! That statement goes for many of the vaccines that are now mandatory. If I could turn back time, there are maybe two, that I would consider at an older age than the current schedule, and I'm not even certain I would do those. Just my personal feelings.

You can read posts from others discussing exemptions here

Kim,

Last week I recieved in the mail from my insurance co. that my 11yo would need 4 vaccines at this age. They kindly listed them all and I about fell out of my chair when the Gardisil said she would need three shot every three months until the series was over.

Looks like I may be homeschooling her until college, and she may just be entering Basement U for that too. :P

Thanks for the info, Kim.
