Hi All!

This same time last year, my son (just turned 7) developed what appeared to be a throat clearing tic. Well, there was a sniff before it. Anyway, at the time he was on Singulair and Rhinocort for allergies. After researching the two, I found that Singulair had been associated with tics by parents. So, after taking him off both of them...they went completely away. There was a time when he'd start a little and I took him off of his vitamins (the Scooby Doo/Flinstone Gummies)...they'd stop completely. Well, now they seemed to have come back. I tried putting him on Zyrtec thinking maybe it was allergies but that didn't seem to help so I took him off of that and didn't give him a vitamin for the last 2 weeks until this morning...a different one with Magnesium in it...you know, in my confusion. This morning I made him an appointment with his pediatrician but its not for 2 weeks to see if things subside again. So, while very confused and a little scared, I am here to see if anyone else's child has experienced the same and to know WHAT WORKED if anything.

Welcome cm,

My son had some really bad vocal tics, and we did see some major help with the Natural Calm.

Have you done any diet changes? Taking out the junk (food coloring, msg ect...) could really help.

Read back posts and you will get a lot of info.

Have you ever had allergy tests done?

I wish you the best of luck. Its nice to have a large following/friends but it is also the best gift and answered prayer when people find what they are looking for and therefore have no need to post anymore.

God Bless,

C.P.

He had allergy tests when he was a little over 2 and everything came back negative.

As for Natural Calm/Kid's Calm...is the product to calm? Should I talk to a doctor first? I have seen lots of people posting about this product. How soon did you see results with your son? I haven't tried eliminating junk from his diet and I really don't know where to begin other than with candy.

Hi There,

Our experience with Natural calm was that when I initially gave it her, it seemed like there was some improvement in her tics ; but later I wasn't sure anymore as I could not make out any more improvements. It seemed like the effects/improvements had plateaued off..

What seems to work for us so far (but it has been only a few weeks though) is removing the foods that she is allergic too. I think it would be a good idea to get your son re-tested as he may have developed new sensitivities to some foods.

Good luck and hope your son feels better soon !

Hi,

It was over night with the calm. He had a screaming tic that has never come back. We too have seen that there is no more improvement, but It did work for the screaming. Sometimes I think we get comfortable with the tic we see then when they stay the same for awhile we forget how bad they were and think things don't work anymore. That is how I see things in our house.

Natural Calm helps with the tics.

I promise not to bug you again but is it Natural Calm or Kid's Calm. And, it does tell you how much for what age, right? Are there any side effects or any bad reports from anyone regarding it? Thanks MUCH!!!

Both products are made by Peter Gillham. Natural Calm is for adults and is magnesium only. The Kid's Calm is magnesium, vitamin C, and Zinc. I give my son a teaspoon every night before bed. I have not seen any tic benefits but I must say that it does help him fall asleep faster even when his OCD is high( I was totally surprised about this one). Anyway, the natural calm has worked great for my husband. We all take it. They tell you on the bottle to start slow since magnesium loosens the bowels and then adjust up. There are no side effects that we've seen. I'm going to be increasing my son's dosage b/c I'm seeing an increase in his tics now that we're in pool season here in AZ.

I want to encourage you to read these boards and learn all you can. My son just started with facial tics back in November and now we're seeing OCD. These boards have been a godsend for me/us. I haven't done all the diet cleanup yet but I have started the process with getting his neurotransmitters tested. I suggest keeping a food diary and also a tic/behavior diary to see if you can see some sort of correlation between those things. Welcome to the boards!

We have not tried supplements yet, but we do eliminate all artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and eat organic as much as possible (as do so many here) - it worked wonders within a few weeks. I highly recommend giving it a try. If you are not sure where to start, this site has lots of information. If you do a search, you will find a post with all of the hidden names of MSG - I brought this list with me to the grocery store when I first began. Make sure you recognize all ingredients on packaged foods as pure food ingredients. If you are not sure what an ingredient is, don't buy it. It takes some effort at first, but becomes much easier with time. Its eye opening to take a good look at what is in much of what we eat!
