myrose
First and foremost....THANK YOU to all of you for your constant advice, suggestions and guidance through it all! I just finished reading all the responses I had to my last few post and WOW. I do reply to each one but I am not sure if I am doing it correctly so that you see it? I am still trying to figgure out the navigation in here... Anyhow for those of you NOT familiar with my last few posts or so my daughter was ticing pretty badly a bit back and was put on nasonex for a two week period for a stuffed up nose that would not go away. I noticed almost complete absence of the tics just the next day after she started the spray. They remained gone and only a foot stomp appeared, nothing more. (Harldy noticeable) I was waiting to see the outcome after we were off the nasonex and it seemed okay but then I had to take her in again shortly after for what I believed to be was just a cold. She had no symptoms but was diagnosed with strep. We started amoxicllin that day and I saw nothing of tics at all. COMPLETELY GONE! Then...I saw the first one the other day (foot stomp). Just one time but it sure had me more confused than ever. Well I may have found out what was going on! She came out with a rash today. Little red dots all over, almost like measles or a better word would be hives. I immediately called her doctor and she instructed us to come in. When we arrived she looked at my daughter and said it was a reaction to the amoxicillin. (This was our first time ever on antibitocs) I said okay but what puzzled me is that she has been on the antibiotic since last Wednesday and a reaction (if any) should of taken place within a few days or so. Then it HIT me! She was taking her medicine 2x a day mixed in yogurt (the pharmicist by the way told me that it was okay to do this) But for the last 3 days she was taking it in homemade applesauce. Apparently what I understood and thought I knew was that yogurt is good to take when on antibiotics because it helps build back up those good cultures that the antibiotics kill being that they kill them all...good and bad. But the doctor said today that by mixing it in yogurt and taking it all at the same time would make the medicine less potent and she would not get the full effect from it. The last 2 days taking it with applesause allowed the full dosage and effect so that is why it took her until now to react to it. Almost like she just started her full dosage just two days ago (Make sense to anyone?) Is this true?? Would explain alot right now for me if its true. So please if anyone is mixing their antibitoics with yogurt...please look into it. She took her off from the amoxicillin, told me to give her benedryl tonight and then tomorrow she starts on Azithromycin for 3 days. I soaked her in aveno oatmeal tonight and then the benedryl kicked in. Her nickname is polka-dots for a few days... Please let me know if anyone can verify the info from the Doc. and if I am understanding it right. Thanks in advance to Everyone!
P_Mom
yes, that sounds perfectly correct. It is good to eat yogurt or take probiotics with antibiotics, but, as far away from the antibiotics as possible. Taking them together just renders them less effective, because then they have each other to immediately battle with.
Caryn
You said the tics were completely gone on the amox, even though it was with yogurt? Are you sure the amox is the thing that stopped the tics? You said she came down with strep? Was she eating at the time? Kids with food allergies/intolerances will show improvement or complete lack of ticcing when they are sick and not eating. (My ds was one when he still had symptoms). As soon as the offending food is reintroduced then the symptoms will reappear. This is a common observance from many folks here who have kids with food issues. Yes Caryn she was tic free until just a few days ago when I noticed a foot stomp (not sure if you read that post) It was only the one time. The way I understand it she was still getting the antibiotic...just not at the strength she should have. She was diagnosed with strep last Wednesday and this is why she was put on the amoxicillin to begin with. She had no symptoms of the strep, no sore throat, no white dots on the inside of mouth or nothing. Her appetite never slowed down, nor did she! Her diet is pretty much a small variety and her favorite food is broccoli and aspharagus. We have always ate organic and the preservatives, additives, sweets, dyes etc...were never really in her diet to begin with. She doesn't prefer the sweets and junk maybe because we never offered them to her as she was growing up. She does though eat them at the occassional birthday party and holidays of course. She also hates soda and won't go near any kind of potato chip to speal of. Her drink by choice is water and for snacks she goes after carrot sticks and such. Thank GOD she was like this on her own so I didn't have to stop letting her have some of the foods you love. Other than the foot stomping I noticed the other day, she is again tic free. Strange huh? I keep waiting though and I am prepared to start Bonnies vitamins if and when they come back on strong as they were before. Thank you so much for your thoughts and reply...I LOVE these boards and have come to the conclusion that I could NOT LIVE without them! Have a wonderful weekend...Sincerely, Wendy
michele
Wendy, Once my daughter had a horrible rash over her entire body. It was worse in her groan an her trunk. We soaked her in oatmeal baths and put cortisone creams on her. I took her to specialists. All we could figure out was it was an allergy to something. Could have been a scarletina rash, maybe the detergent. She used to get terrible strep before her tonsils were removed. She probably was the carrier that caused my son such bad episodes. Now with them gone she has never had it again. She used to get strep at least four times a year and each illness would last over a week. It got to the point she was missing too much school. With the antibiotics and PANDAS, it may take more then one to get a "right" fit. We were on pen vk and my son still showed signs of tics. We upped it during episodes. Then I noticed that when he was on omnisef during a major flare up it completely took the tics away. He was much happier and the compulsiveness went way down. We also tried augmentin and it helped too but not as well as the omnisef. So for now I give him daily omnisef. If he gets sick or shows signs of getting an episode I just give him 2 tsp instead of one for a few days. That seems to help him from getting a full blown attack. However, he still gets a small reaction. Last week he had a sore throat and fever and this week he is less aggreeable and not as focused as before. It has been a long winter and he has been exposed to strep a ton. It definately waxes and wanes and peaks and valleys. It does help to come here. Other people don't understand what we are going through and here everyone is so "real" about their experiences. It is a great network!
