tics wane

I am now bewildered because after four months of finger and toe cracking especially worse the past month, the last three days Andrew is hardly doing it. Now I am wondering why they have calmed down. We have done the same diet for four months, antibiotics since June, the zinc and taurine supplements for a month, the only change was the yeast fighter nystatin for the past two weeks. He even noticed he hasn't been cracking. I even cut back on the antibiotic augmentin to 250mg. once a day. I still notice him frequenting the bathroom to urinate more then normal. I just am pondering why would it stop now? Is this part of the wax and wane cycle. Was his cracking from a virus or strep he had been exposed to? Our pattern with PANDAS in the past was after exposure he would have symptoms like blinking, finger movements , moodiness, emotional, hyper, for about eight weeks after exposure. This time he just kept having it for four months. I have heard tics are worse in the fall with nerves from school and maybe because I took him to Dr. Murphy in Florida on a plane. I am thrilled they are now stopping but would love to know what to do so I could keep it this way! My husband even slipped up and gave him Special K yesterday and he is no worse! He went swimming last night in chlorine and they are still better! It makes me wonder is it just the course ofthe tics or are these supplements and diet making a difference?

Michelle,

Glad to hear the good news! Just curious, when you say "exposure", do you mean exposure to strep or to any illness? Has he gotten strep while on antibiotic? You know, I have noticed the same thing about diet etc. Sometimes it seems like something they are eating, lacking, etc., is causing tics. But then the next day, the same foods, enviroment, etc., causes No reaction. I think with PANDAS, it is mainly illness, etc. Not 100% sure, it just seems that way. My sons ticcing increased recently, and he did not appear ill at all, except I noticed a mild, rash on his torso that has now gone away. That had to be some kind of virus, and I believe that is why his symptoms increased, although mild, nothing like when he has strep!!

Take care.

My son has been negative to strep since the antibiotics in June. Once when we noticed his symptoms increase after we returned from Florida we had him tested for strep and he was neg. although my daughter was positive. That is when we upped him to a stronger antibiotic. However his symptoms did get better but the tics were still there. After a two week dose of Omniseph I have been giving him the stronger antibiotic Augmentin 250 for over a month. This is the first time he has been symptom free in so long. He is still running to pee alot though. Also his behaviors are still a bit odd. It is like he has too many endorphins in his brain and he acts kind of wild. In the past he has gotten really bad overnight with the tics and behaviors almost exploding when he has gotten sick from flu or colds or strep or even shots or stress. I think it has to do with his body fighting infections or what it thinks is a strep attack it brings out the tics and ocd and behaviors. I am going to document this and see what happens next. Right now he has turned against alot of the gluten free things he was eating. It is making it hard to feed him. He is really skinny I don't want him to lose weight. Plus I have not been doing the powder nystatin everyday. It is a real battle to get it down.
