faith
Thanks Q's mom, In reading your posts, I think I'm realizing our son's cases, we have some experiences in common--except alot longer. so maybe I will try to really implement the casein free since I have always had the feeling dairy was not good for him, but I really do restrict it alot, only rice milk, hardly any cheese, etc., and he did not test intolerant to casein on the Igg testing. And yet this vocal still remains, and now some eye twitching. We do corn/yeast free now, if I do dairy completely, not sure there will be anything left... You did say that your son had a vocal? Is that also diminished? How long had you removed the screen time before you noticed improvement? Any other suggestions are appreciated as I think we have dealt with the same symptoms. I have another little theory, so wondering what you all think of this... sometimes I think that the tics or in our case eye tics are not necessarily "triggered" by the "screen" (as in the actual mechanisim and flashing of the screen) but by the "action" of watching tv or computer. Hard to explain, but what I mean is, is it possible that it is just something they feel the urge to do when looking a fixed square object, and it is like an obsessive thing to do with their eyes in relation to the space they are looking at, for instance an urge to look up or over or blink, and they do it so much especially when they do alot of screens (because the reminder is there) and then it sort of carries over to even when they are not watching tv, because it becomes like, well, "a habit" -- For instance, something I do when I am wearing dark sunglasses, I have the urge to look to the side and sort of look "outside" of the dark glass beyond the rim of the glasses to the light that I can see in my peripheral vision and sometimes I will need to turn my head slightly to the side to do this and only to the left (since I'm wearing sunglasses, no one can really notice what I am doing--it's my little compulsion). ... Well, don't know if that explains anything, except . But really, what I am getting at is that I only do that when I am wearing the sunglasses, so am I going to say the sunglasses are the "trigger"? No, -- what I think is that it is just something I feel like doing when I am wearing the sunglasses, and wondering if the same things is coming into play with the screens with the kids , so when removing the screens, the "reminder" to do that is not there, and so they sort of "get out of that habit" and then it subsides sort of out of sight, out of mind? And as with any "habit", when you don't have that reminder around for a while, it subsides and the urge sort of weans. .... Any thoughts from anyone who gets what I am (maybe unscuccessfully) trying to get at? Faith
QsMom
Hi Faith- For vocals, what we had before I started the casein free was throat clearing, coughing and what I call the "One more time" tic. My son would tic (eye mouth, ect.) and then say "One More Time" and do the body tic again. This one was heartbreaking because you could hear him tic'ing even if you were not in the same room with my son, and it made the tics more noticable. Sometimes, this went on all day ... the screens made it worse so we went most of the summer with no screens. After the diet implementation, the "One more time" vocal has totally gone away along with the OCD symptoms. He's been in what I'd call this stable condition now since about the 2nd week of September. He still has a little throat clearing here and there. It is very mild, not every day, and not constant at all, and seems to still be reducing with time. I'm not convinced that it is a tic at this point. This could be triggered his known allergies - cat and dust or by something that still needs to come out of his diet. I also think that some of the behaviors became a habit while he was ticcing so badly and think that the throat clearing may fall into that catagory b/c it is mild and infrequent. You asked about the cat previously as we share allergies there so to give you an update- We still have our cat but have confined her to our unfinished basement, trying to figure out what to do there. If you go casein free, email me on ACN, and I can give you some ideas for recipies and substitions we used for the dairy items as well as recipies. It was overwhelming at first but much easier now. Good luck and happy thoughts ....
