Too Many Supplements

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I hate taking my supplements and thats because there's too many to take. There's 20 pills in morning and 20 at night. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cut the amount of pills down? If I get them copounded it would cut it down to about 20 pills, but compounding is really expensive unless my insurance picks it up (I don't know if they do or not, but since they're vitamins I would guess not).

Here's what my chelation doctor has me on:

Vitamin A & E 25000/1000

Acetyl-L-Carnitine 1000 mg

Alpha-Ketoglutaric Acid 600 mg

Vitamin B6 (P5P) 100 mg

Biotin 5000 mcg

Vitamin B Complex (B50) 1 tablet 3 times per day

Vitamin C 2000 mg

Calcium 1500 mg

L-Carnitine 500 mg

CoQ10 100 mg

Vitamin E 800 IU

Flaxseed Oil 3 capsules

5HTP 50 mg

Folinic Acid 800 mcg

Magnesium 750 mg

Ther Biotic Complete 3 Capsules

Reduced L-Glutathione 100 mg

Selenium 200 mcg

Zinc 100 mg

These dosages are based on my own test results and by doctor recommendation. Please don't use my dosages of vitamins because many of them are high doses and they are what have been prescribed for me.

eeeeh!

Hi Carolyn,

that is alot to swallow. For all the knowledge I have about supplements, I hardly ever take them cause I hate swallowing them too, something about the aftertaste and feeling it go down into my stomach, especially the bcomplex. But like a robot, I religously dole it out to my son and he's real great about it, but the capsules I empty into a little juice and the minerals are liquid drops also put in juice. The only tablets he swallows are the B's and they are very small.

It seems not much you can do if you need all this. Maybe the ones that are in capsule form could be opened in a small shot glass together and then just add your favorite juice. Or maybe do ten at breakfast, ten at lunch, ten at dinner, and ten before bed just to break it up a bit. For my son, I'll give a couple supps at breakfast, than something at supper, and the magnesium right before bed in a little juice. He'd probably get annoyed if it was all at once, too.

Hope all is good otherwise,

Faith

Carolyn,

Can you get a really good blender/juicer machine that you could use to make shakes, then add the capsules to it and stir? I know there would be some residue in the glass, but maybe just a light stir in the center of the glass. This might help you get them down.

Just my 2 cents.

Do you have an absorption problem. If you don't I see no reason why you would take that many supplements in those amounts. For example your at the upper limit w/ your vitamin C level(assuming you only take one tablet per day) the RDA is only 75-110 mg per day. Your vitamins A&E are very high also and are fat-soluble so it is really hard for your body to get rid of extra amounts. All the vitamin and mineral supplements you are taking put a lot of stress on your kidneys and liver. If I were you I would get a second opinion. Also I'm assuming that your chelation doctor is trying to remove heavy metals from your system, if this is the case cilantro is excellent at removing heavy metals and a lot less harsh on your body then all the supplements you are currently taking

Hi Carolyn. I do remember you from other boards!

I have a few comments.

I think your Vitamin A is really high for everyday use. I wonder why your doctor thinks you need that much?

Long term high A can cause increased fluid pressure in the CNS. I would think 10,000 IU would be enough. (Is your vitamin A

retinol or betacarotene? I am assuming retinol)

Long term use of selenium in high amounts (we used to think selenium was safe) has been shown to

lead to increased incidence of Diabetes type II. I would think 100mcg would be enough.

I don't understand two Carnitines. The acetyl is better absorbed and better all around. The L-carnitine seems unnecessary to me.

I think you should have a Vit D level drawn. This is new information, and Vit D levels are being found very low in

patients. If you are low, then the calcium cannot be absorbed properly. The doctor can do this with a simple blood test.

With the high zinc intake, I'd also get a copper/zinc ratio done. Long term high zinc can deplete copper. Copper is needed

for your bones, to keep your discs in your back supple, and for the blood forming marrow.

I would also consider adding one evening primrose to the flax oil, to help with conversion to the long chain fatty acids. This

is optional, but might help.

Your CoQ-10 is not very high for therapeutic effects. This product has bioavailability issues so I hope you are using a good

brand. The price has come down radically in the past few months, and you may be able to increase to 300mg with no

increase in cost (if you are a shrewd shopper).

And you want to make sure you are using the alpha form of Vit E, which is more active than the dl-mixed alpha form.

Those are my comments for what they are worth. I won't go into doses with you, otherwise, since you see a doctor for all this.

I am just giving my opinion on some of the new research.

Take care!
