Michel12 Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 Pandas is considered as an encepheltitis because encepheltis literally means brain disease. Why don't pychiatrists identify other mental illnesses as encephelitis or diagnose pandas then? You would think if someone was so activated and had such head pian thenb that would be considered...
MaryAW Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain. More and more doctors are referring to PANS as "Infection Induced Autoimmune Encephalopathy." Encephalopathy can refer to a wide variety of brain disorders with very different etiologies. Personally, I hate the cute acronyms and would prefer encephalitis or encephalopathy.
pr40 Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 "Personally, I hate the cute acronyms and would prefer encephalitis or encephalopathy." indeed -- there is something idiotic about PANDAS acronym. I am wondering what they were thininking. everytime I have to say what my child has I have to role my eyes. it's like cancer were FLUFY, leukemia PUPPY. in some cases, like the one described in the book titled "brain on fire," they do identify the condition as encephalitis. I guess, then, symptoms are the difference btw PANDAS and encephalities.
rowingmom Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Most psychiatrists will reject the idea that psychiatric illness can be caused by infection / inflammation. If that paradigm were to be accepted, they would be out of the prescribing business. Infection / inflammation is a medical problem, not a psychiatric one.
