cara615
How bad did your child's gut get? did you ever do an OAT test to find out? What did you find and how did you treat? DS has high Arabinose - yeast marker, high 3-oxylutaric - yeast marker, high HPHPA - clostridia and all the other bad bacterial markers are high. We will be trying a fermented yogurt probiotic to help with this. But I wanted to know if there are others with bad guts out there.
searching_for_help
Yes, my dd has yeast and clostridia (NOT diff.) issues. Honestly, with all the processed foods, abx, even things like Splenda affecting good gut bacteria, I doubt if there are many Americans with "good guts". We treat with Nystatin and probiotics. We use several different probiotics. Culturelle and Jarrow's Sacch. Boulardii for the clostridia. Higher amounts with more strains for the other issues. Since she is currently on an abx for mycoP, I space it out so the abx doesn't kill the probiotic. For instance, I'll give her the second dose of abx around 7 pm, and give her a probiotic around 10 pm, in hopes that the probiotic will be helping replenish during the night. IF she didn't have restrictive eating issues, I'd make Kefir shakes and add other fermented foods in, but she won't eat them anymore. She used to drink Kefir shakes - with organic yogurt, Kefir (strawberry or pomegrate flavored), banana, frozen strawberries, a bit of stevia to sweeten it and the ice. Throw it all in a blender, and it's very yummy. Do the probiotics do any good? Beats me... but I figure it's worth a try. We haven't retested to see if it is helping. So many test... so little money left! 3bmom
cara615
We are doing homeopathy to treat the candida and possibly the clostridia too. There is a remedy for that. i am hoping to not have to use the nystatin. We will see. once i get the BRAVO probiotics i hope to see more improvement. I just don't know why we are on augmentin now instead of vancomyacin to kill the clostridia. (we don't have c. diff either). i have a call into Bradstreet to see how we can get him off the abx. i don't think staying on them is the answer. i know he needs to be protected from strep but right now he is ticcing from the clostridia and nothing else (well maybe seasonal allergies). Mayzoo
Two years on zithromax, with one year on augmentin with some other thrown in during illnesses. My kiddos OAT test was fine, but we do a lot for the gut. She is on an 8 strain enteric probiotic, inulin prebiotics, sacc boullardi, bio-enhanced curcumin, home made milk kefir, and home made yogurt. The kefir and yogurt were every day, but now they are not as regular, but about to be reintegrated. Edited April 18, 2014 by mayzoo
nicklemama
Three plus years on abx. Takes Klaire Thera Detoxification Support probiotic, 2 capsules with 100 billion total and a saccromyces boulliardi every day. Testing shows he is fine. Also takesDiflucan every other day. Enhansa. He eats a greek yogurt nearly every day.
cara615
I find it interesting that some kids are Ok and some just aren't. Ds has been on abx since Nov 2013. Mostly azithro until we switched to Augmentin in the Beginning of April. he has been on Klair Labs Ther-biotic detox plus an orthomolecular probiotic with 15 strains for a total of 100 bill every day. He gets coconut yogurt every other day and we are GFCF corn free and low sugar. i had been giving him 8 drops of GSE daily since last July to kill yeast and then keep it at bay. We do 1,000mgs of glutamine every day, borage oil, Vit D, NAC etc. I do everything i can to keep his gut healthy and i have failed miserably. I feel terrible but am wondering if its just the gut flora he was born with - as in not good gut flora. He was a C-section and I believe that my gut flora is the pits so i couldn't have given him anything good in my breast milk
ktdommer
Nearly 4 years on high dose antibiotics for 3 of us. I take VSL #3 DS which insurance covers. I swear it has saved me from any problems at all. I take it with natural applesauce. Sneak it to my boys in a smoothie when I can. Take tons of jarrow SB. Also mix it up with other strains. We all take high doses of nystatin a day. 12 pills each. I didn't want to pay the compounding price to have a high dose made. We all take Enhansa, try to watch carbs. I take diflucan 2 weeks a month. had Oats testing done and look OK. Oldest going off abx this month closely. No idea how long myself and 18 year old son will stay on. Taking care of gut is a lot of work and money.
cara615
Can you tell me what VSL#3 is as well as Enhansa? I ordered dairy free Culturelle as well as Jarrow Sacc. Boulardii to give to DS while we wait for BRAVO probiotic to arrive. i am determined to get his gut back in shape. i think everyone in my house will benefit from these supplements. Mayzoo
VSL #3 is another probiotic: http://www.vsl3.com/ Enhansa is one of the bio-enhansed curcumin that are available. This one is made by Lee Silsby pharmacy.
MomWithOCDSon
We did Augmentin XR for two years straight. There was some gastro "adjustment" initially, but once DS got accustomed to it and we started regular probiotics, there were no issues, really. A good (i.e., expensive) mixed strain probiotic (we used Renew Life Ultimate Flora Critical Care (50 billion units) and sach b daily. Now, off abx for over 2 years, we have cut back to more affordable options (Culturelle daily, sach b when tummy issues arise, and Ultimate Flora on a very occasional -- maybe once per month) basis. We also used some bentonite clay occasionally during abx regimen on the premise that it would help "sweep" out detritus (dead organisms) from the intestinal tract. Some people use charcoal for similar purposes, I think.
cara615
Thank you all for your helpful comments. I just ordered Sacc. B and some Culturelle dairy-free. I will look into Enhansa as I cook a lot with curcumin but ds probably needs more than my cooking delivers
3bmom
Cara, C-sections may contribute, (I had 3) but it is more the change in our food supply. All 3 of mine were really healthy for awhile which I don't think would be the case if gut was bad from the start. GMO food allows round up pesticide to be sprayed directly on a plant at levels never tested. Round up is an antibiotic killing beneficial soil bacteria, then it also kills our gut bacteria using the same pathway as weeds. This sets us up for chronic infections and a dysfunction immune system. My post on Innflamation and Neurological pathways will explain how the end result is mental issues. 3bmom
I want to add that Amy Yasko , (I think since I read so much) mentions if there are vitamin deficiencies mainly zinc you will have poor colonization of all the good bacteria. That goes back to us all being a different tapestry and what works for one doesn't work for the other or is more difficult to get same results.
