Kathy4Him
I know I can find this in old posts but hope you will not mind reposting as I am hoping to get an email off to Dr. by morning. My ds 24, is on zithromax 250 mg daily. We have also used biaxin 500 mg daily in lieu of zith. He is allergic to penicilllin, augmentin, keflex and omnicef. His Dr. told me tonight he will consider using combo abx and wanted to know what is working for others. In addition, he is open to vancomycin, clindamycin, acylovir, zovirax, and rifampin. Please let me know if any of these are helping and what abx combos are helping. Worst thing are ocd behaviors and tics Head turning. Thanks a million, you are all the best!! T_Anna
We have used Clindomycin and Refampin to clear up strep. Right now DS is on Augmentin (penicillin) and Doxcycyline. T.Anna
nicklemama
Augmentin and biaxin. Augmentin and doxy works well too but we r off that for the summer due to sun sensitivity potential.
airial95
Augmentin/Azith/Rifampin combo. The Rifampin is the only thing that has cleared my son's tics, and since he started it long term in September - it's the longest strep free stretch we've had since 2009 (knocking on wood now.) rowingmom
When DD11 was taking a pulsed combo (3 days on, 4 days off) of malarone, azith, plaquinel, minocycline and tindamax last winter, her ticcing and executive function were the best I had ever seen. It was the first time I did not see her tic at all. I had seen previous decreases in ticcing with biaxin/rifampin (LLMD thinks her PANS reactions are caused by bartonella), but not to this extent, and not for this long (3 months). It could have been due to the anti-inflammatory actions of the mino or azith, IDK. Unfortunately symptoms ramped up with the addition of grapefruit seed extract, and after several attempts to bring her back to baseline by switching combinations, ticcing was still a problem. We then went back to the previously mentioned combo and added curcumin (LifeExtension) (ticcing decreased) and then phosphatidyl choline (more decrease of ticcing). We then made the decision to wean off abx and cover infections with several herbal protocols (Buhner, Byron White, Zhang) while keeping the curcumin and phosphatidyl choline in place. She is holding her own after 1 month and ticcing has decreased to a very low level (a little in the evening that most people would not notice). At her worst she was having trouble reading because of an eye blinking/neck jerking tic and having trouble speaking due to vocal ticcing. I can say she is now back to the level of ticcing and executive function she had attained last winter on the combo.
Dedee
Our best one was Minocycline / Cefdiner and now Zith / Rifampin. We are treating Lyme / Bart / Myco. It really depends on what you are treating. Dedee
sf_mom
Numerous combination of antibiotics have been helpful to our kids and many of the ones mentioned. However, your son's dose of Azithro seems low for his age and probable weight. You might suggest to your Dr. to double dose to see if you gain improvement prior to adding an additional antibiotic. 500 m.g would probably be correct dosage. nicklemama
Good catch SF Mom. The dose is too low. My 9yo, 67lb son is taking augmentin 500mg twice a day and biaxin 250mg twice a day.
airial95
Didn't even catch the dosage...my 5 year old son is 36 lbs and taking 250 mg/day.
Kathy4Him
I have consistently asked him to increase to 500mg, his response: "duration not dose" UGH!!!! rowingmom
You need to google abx dosage vs efficacy for your DS and show it to him. If the dosage/timing is not sufficient he could be potentially creating resistance. It's hard for him at that age, when parents appear unknowing and unable to understand. The older I got, the smarter my parents got. I know I am heading downhill quickly in the eyes of our DS16.
Christianmom
I'm not sure who your doctor is, but you may consider getting another one if he's not prescribing the dosage your son needs. It is very easy to waste a lot of time on wrong antibiotics dosages and combinations. For us, we started out with Dr. T. Though I think the world of him and will always be grateful for his great compassion, if I had to do it over, I would have gone to an LLMD from the beginning, whether or not my son had lyme. My son in the end had lyme (as well as a reaction to strep), but it really doesn't matter whether your son has lyme or not. An LLMD can treat PANS because most lyme kids have PANS. And LLMDs are used to prescribing antibiotic combinations because it is necesary in treating lyme. In my opinion, experience is everything when deciding what antibiotic combinations to use and at what dosage.
