MomtoJake
We are dealing with Myco P right now and have been in a moderate to severe flare, however not as bad as DS initial exacerbation. Saw Dr. M yesterday, going back on Azith, and I felt the flare was managed well with Advil/Azith and now thought more Azith should help even more. So on the ride back from Dr. Murphy (4.5 hour car trip) my DS who can hold his urine all day til I make him go, had to pee 5x!! We had to have him go in a water bottle because he had to go so bad and today it continues! For us, frequent urination comes right before a flare not in the middle. Also he did homework on the ride home and his handwriting has degraded tremendously. God help me if this is something else on top of the Myco P. Has anyone experienced this, a new flare in the middle of a flare that is receding? Crap, he would have to do this on the way home from Dr. M and not on the way there!! Guess I need to have him swabbed for strep.
Missmom
Does it really matter if you have him swabbed for strep if he is going to be starting the azyth? Or do you just want to know for your own records? I would get that azyth filled right away and hope to stop this right away.

Probably will have him swabbed anyway, just to know. DH walking in the door with the Azith right now!!
airial95
Azith does work for strep, it's what they put my daughter on as she is allergic to penicillin. As for flare coming off of a flare - yes, it has happened to us. It was always either another strep infection (happened multiple times to my son while on azith), or exposure to someone else who had strep (more common reason for us). Has the whole family been tested?

LNN
I know zith works on strep and it works for many kids. It works for my DD (who's allergic to penicillins and cephalosporins). It hasn't protected my DS. He's on it for lyme (along with other abx that we rotate). But he's flared from strep while on it. I now have a stash of augmentin (with dr permission) to use if/when he seems to be flaring from something other than a lyme herx. I don't know how your drs will feel, but you may want to ask about a temporary combo abx approach and use both zith+an extracellular that works well for strep. Zith alone doesn't always do the trick, particularly if the infection is in the sinuses where the mucus (acting as a biofilm) makes it harder for the abx to reach. Ceftin (which is very expensive), omnicef and augmentin have worked better for us in those situations.

I also have a stash of Augmentin so if it is positive I will call Dr. M to see what she thinks. Unfortunately, due to a carnitine deficiency my DS can't take Omnicef or anything in that class. (It can never be easy!) I am hopeful that it is not strep-- I thought of the possibility that is it s urinary tract infection so I will bring this up to the ped. Don't think it will turn out to be that though.

There could be someone in school though-- so hard to avoid And I know he does react to other people's strep because last year his older brother had strep and he reacted but did not test positive. Ugh!

Ugh! So if he is reacting to someone else but he is negative what is the best course for you to take? Start abx. or ride out the flair? I always wonder when my son tests negative but is obviously starting to flair what others of you do. Right now my my ds is taking full dose abx. He has been taking them for two months but is about to run out. Hoping our dr. will prescribe more? I am going to order some olive leaf just in case we can't get any more.
