Missmom
Hi everyone, My ds12 has been fighting all of this since his last major episode on March of this year. But happy to say we have now had about two weeks of total " normal-ness". He has been on augmentin now for about two months and something finally kicked in..... Our doctor wants my son to take the full dose augmentin only during flairs and then take keflex as a daily prophylactic.. Problem has been each time I try to stop augmentin completely and move to keflex the symptoms return... This time I am really scared to stop the augmentin but I am almost out of refills. I have seen some of your posts regarding tapering off abx. What I am considering trying is instead of two augmentin pills a day tapering to one augmentin pill and one keflex a day for a week or so then maybe two keflex a day eventually down to one keflex a day... Has anyone tried anything similar to this? Our next appt. with the doctor is mid-October. I have seen where some of you taper off of one abx, but what about transitioning. I know if I call the dr. he will say to just start the keflex. I am not trying to pretend I am a doctor but I have tried twice to just start the keflex and symptoms returned. Thanks for any of your thoughts. Missmom Edited September 14, 2012 by Missmom

Yes, I have told the doctor but I think he is not a believer in long term treatment dose abx. He wants to get my son on prophylactic dose ASAP. I am almost out of the augmentin but have six months worth of keflex. I only have about two weeks left of the augmentin. Our appt. is about a month away. When I try to call and discuss it I only speak to the nurse and it is difficult to convey the messages. The doctor is not local so I can't just stop by and get an apt. blakes_mom
Hi Miss Mom, I looked through Blakes medical records as I know our sons sx are ver similiar.Blake was on keflex for about 3 weeks and this was the only antibiotic that did not work for him. Hopefully your doctor will consider trying another antibiotic as there is no sense in using one that isnt working.Blake continues to take zithromax 250 three x a week with good results.Augmentin was a very sucessful one for us too and what we use for flares. I am also scared to try Zithromax because when my son takes biaxin his tics increase usually immediately and if I am not mistaken, I think Zithromax and biaxin are in the same family. Right now I know the augmentin is working so it is so frusterating. Keflex has worked for him a couple years ago but does not seem to be helping this time. I have been keeping you and Blake in my prayers. Hope he is holding steady.
