I want to add the NAC back into dans life. Does anyone remember the dosage recommended for OCD from the nimh?

Danny's over 90 pounds, right? Then it would be the adult dose of 3,000 mg. per day. Ours come in 600 mg. capsules, so we do 1,800 mg. morning and another 1,200 mg. at night.

Start low and titer up, though, because it can cause some gastro discomfort if you give too much, too quickly.

Good luck!

Dans 150 lbs. Ours is 750 mg. So I've been giving him 1 at night for 3 days. Should I increase to 1 am 1 pm. He is taking depakote. ( I know) too and minocycline

Melanie --

You probably ought to run your questions past a knowledgable pharmacist and/or Danny's doctor because I don't know what possible interactions, if any, you might run into with those meds. All I know is that you have to be mindful of NAC dose alongside any serotonin-impacting meds or supplements (like SSRIs, St. John's Wort, inositol, SamE, etc.) because it impacts serotonin availability, also and you don't want to overdose that.

Sorry not more help!

Please tell me what is NAC? Thanx :)

N-acetylceisteine, a naturally-occuring amino acid that can help control excess brain glutamate which is thought to be at least one culprit in OCD, anxiety, etc. It's inexpensive and easily available over the counter at places like Whole Foods and The Vitamin Shoppe, plus it's been studied for its effectiveness. Anecdotally, some kids seem to respond well to it, but others don't. If you search for the term (NAC) on the forum, you'll come up with at least a half-dozen threads.

I just Googled it again and came up with what, to me at least, is a new paper on the topic:

The only "dosage information" I've ever seen came from these two NIMH/Yale trials: one for kids and one for adults. This was our guideline for the 3,000 mg. dose for our now 155 lb, 15yo DS.

Here's the trial paper for adults:

Nancy. I read the study. It said it was cancelled. I remember reading one a year or so ago. Thought there were results?

Sorry, Melanie. I wasn't following . . . I'm flying too fast? I thought you were wondering about dosage.

I'm not sure about the various studies, results, cancellations, etc. I'll have to go back and read what I have in my library again myself. Thanks for the heads up!

here's paper where NAC is mentioned.

They mention other glutamate modulators, there is a chart on page 73.

On the bottom of page 72 there is a graph with riluzole (another glutamate modulator) and it looks like it took about 8 weeks for the full effect. So, I would assume the same might be true of NAC, it might take 6-8 weeks to "kick in" fully.

I think the original study that was done, the one that is reference most, is the on on trichotillomania (hair pulling). I did a quick search and found a journal article about it - completed in 2009. Here is a quote on the dosage:

_______________________________

Investigators performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of NAC treatment for trichotillomania. Fifty patients, aged 18 to 65, with a primary diagnosis of trichotillomania were randomized to receive 1200 mg NAC or placebo every day for 6 weeks. At week 6, if trichotillomania persisted, the dose was increased to 2400 mg/day or a matching increase in placebo pills; 88% of the placebo group and 72% of the treatment group received the dose increase. Patients were evaluated every 3 weeks for 12 weeks; 88% of both groups completed the study.
