Ticked Off Posted July 18, 2012 Report Posted July 18, 2012 Hi I was diagnosed with lyme & babesia just last spring. With the diagnosis comes the research, right? My research showed some hints that my daughter might have lyme, as well. Her symptoms are ADD, auditory processing deficit, short working memory, difficulty falling asleep, headaches, difficulty expressing thoughts (communicating) . So I had her tested through Igenex. She shows positive for IGG, not positive for IGM, because the BB bands were ind. Research again: Found personal blogs that described what seemed like healthy children suddenly becoming very sick and even wheelchair-bound within weeks. Very scarey! My naturopath prefers a gentle route for treatment. Diet, eliminating problem foods, cleansing...which I agree with, but I have a gut feeling that the underlying infection should be treated aggressively before BB has a chance to explode and take her health. I would really appreciate any advice or knowledge experienced parents have to share with me. Thanks very much!
Suzan Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Hello! I am very sorry you find your daughter (and you!) with lyme. My daughters have congenital lyme as well. We have been treating for 2+ years and they are doing well now although we are not quite done with treatment. We started with 1.5 years of antibiotic (abx) treatment with the three abx approach. This worked well for us to decrease the overall load and symptoms. Then we switched to homeopathic treatment (Deseret Biological Lyme Series which my wellness doctor thinks is the best for lyme). It helped us to get to a better place where the abx could not get us. I don't know what would have happened if we had started with that instead of abx. I know many people are helped with non prescription drugs but I think it depends on the person and how lyme attacks them. I agree with your ND approach and I think that is absolutely necessary when treating lyme. But I would feel more comfortable with some form of lyme treatment whether it's herbal (Burhners Herbs) or homeopathic, etc. I know there are other things that I have not tried that may be good too. Of course if you do go the abx route, your ND will be great in helping to keep the gut in shape since the abx will mess with that. I know others will have great advice and stories for you and hopefully you will find something helpful here! Susan
JuliaFaith Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 We started with a 'PANDAS' MD for the first 6 months and treated with abx/steriods/nutrients. There was no improvement at all for my son. So, after some wonderful people on this forum suggested looking into lyme as a possibility, I decided to go to lyme dr. for just one visit before doing IVIG next. This was the best choice that was made for healing my son. We ended up with an ND (originally went to office because one dr. was a MD). Prior dr. told me to get the best dr. I could find and this was it and they were local. We lucked out and ended up in an office that treats the whole body with allopathic (Western)/naturopathic/homeopathic meds/muscle testing (and a few extras from Europe). They said my son 'had everything they treat' (except autism, I believe). It sounds like your ND is on the right track. After the first 3 months of testing/treating a few other things, she treated all of the issues at the same time. Dr. only used Alinia a few short time periods and mostly used naturopathic/homeopathic the rest of the time. Son has been on a probiotic of some kind and detoxing during the entire treatment. He is GF and organic foods only. A virus (HHV-6) has been more difficult to get rid of than the lyme/co-infections (we think it is no longer a problem now-off meds). It sounds like you have found another piece of the puzzle so you only have more healing as you move forward. Best wishes!
Ticked Off Posted July 19, 2012 Author Report Posted July 19, 2012 (edited) Thanks! You both have renewed my faith in natural medicine. Our naturopathic doctor also uses western medicine when indicated, so I'll let her chart out a course for us. It's hard not to get overwhelmed with this! Edited July 19, 2012 by Ticked Off
Ticked Off Posted July 24, 2012 Author Report Posted July 24, 2012 Just returned from the Dr.'s. The only treatment she is prescribing is a course of Berberis (barberry root), followed by a course of probiotics, and repeat. Also, she advised a gluten and dairy free diet. I'm afraid that this is too gentle to do much of anything except wake up the borellia and start a cascade of spirochetes/cysts/l-form ... Just a gut feeling, I'm not a doctor, but this seems like too much of nothing, but just enough to wave a flag to the disease to tighten it's efforts to dig and hide.
