DS, 13 has been talking really loudly and he gets really mad when we tell him to talk softly. Also, he had horrible tinnitus while taking Doxycycline for Lyme and Co. This went away about a year ago.

Every day until he had IVIg he had dark yellow or brown discharge in the bottom of his ears. This stopped after the IVIg, but is starting to come back at 2 weeks, 3 days. His tone of voice is flat or off most of the time.

Has anyone else had this? Did it resolve with time? Tomorrow, I will be checking into an audiologist for testing.

He has primary immunodeficiency, no strep antibodies and Lyme/Bart. If you have any experience with hearing loss, let me know.

Yes! We deal with this off and on, though no documented tinnitus in our case. I actually started a thread along similar lines a few months ago, and it seemed that many had had similar experiences: loud talking without any real awareness that they were doing it!

I think we decided that there was some auditory processing issues associated with some neural inflammation, glutamate overload, etc.

As for your DS getting mad when you talk quietly, could that be an OCD thing? Worried that he's missing something important that's being said?

I think him getting mad is because he doesn't realize just how loud he is talking. My dad was the same way over thirty years ago-he could not believe he was talking loud, but when he had his hearing aids in, he talked at a normal level.

Here is an article about Susac's Syndrome, but it is very similar to PANDAs.

My DS talked very loud. We were constantly asking him to lower his voice. We had no idea he had PANDAS. This has all resolved after 7 months of treatment dose abx and then IVIG. No experience w/ tinnitus or lyme.

Ian does this when he has an ear infection and he used to get those very frequently until he has been on the antibiotics. It could be a PANDAS thing, but you might want to get his ears checked, or even sinuses for some infection that might be hiding up in there. I also get clogged ears when my allergies are acting up.

And in our case, the "What?!?!" becomes more pervasive when his anxiety is ramping up. I can tell from the volume and the tone of that one word when his anxiety is getting the better of him. <_<

My 6 yr old has always been the loudest child at my house for as long as I can remember but she passed hearing exam 2 yr ago so i figured it was just her UNTIL last week she had onset of mult tics of head, shoulders, arms and legs and she's never had any of this happen before. She passed EEG and failed sleep study due to tonsils blocking airway. We see neurologist Monday for first visit. Thinking back she had mult ear infections in the past, also treated for tonsillitis in April ( md never checked for strep at this time)......does anyone think this could be Panda that is upset by virus she had last week and another ear infection? We are so worried due to abrupt onset of what I'm calling tics.

I DO think it could be PANDAS; we actually believe that a series of re-occurring ear infections was what first set our DS on this path. There was a study (French, I think?) that linked otitis medea (ear infections) and strep bacteria in the fluid trapped in the ear. If you Google "ear infection strep," you'll probably come up with it. There's also an older forum topic on the subject that you can search for.
