Ok, I'm confused. Is there a difference in the type of mycoplasmas? I know one is called walking pneumonia and there is another one associated with Lyme co-infections. Are they really the same thing? I'm having a hard time knowing the difference here. My dd tested positive for Mycoplasma back in May before IVIG. Please give me some info.

Hi PTCgirl,

There are different strains of mycoplasma. Some more common in different areas of the world. But - the tics carry the same myco as far as I know, as humans get.

In heathy people - you don't usually even need antibitocs to clear it. But, it looks like pandas kids usually have a chronic type - their immune system does not clear it. Similar to those kids with super high strep titers , and no physical evidence of strep.

I think the reason it is a common Lyme co-infection not just because ticks carry mycoP (along with other diseases) but that Lyme messes with your immune system, making it extremely difficult to clear the myco P. So, even if the tick didn't wasn't carrying mycoP, if you got Lyme fromt he tick, you can still have mycoP chronically - since it is a very common (its everywhere).

Also, it was found that Gulf War Syndrome was actaully mycoP. The microbiologist that discovered that therorizes that 2 things could be why so many Gulf War vets had this. One, is that there are wheaponiszed strains of mycoP - that he believes our army/their armies worked on and these strains are stronger and more difficult to clear. The other theory is that troups get a huge amount of vaccines in a very short amount of time. Perhaps all the immunizations (20 or so?) messes up immune system enough to turn what would be a bad cold for most people in to a chronic condition, that they have extreme difficutly getting rid of. His work shows that about 70? percent of these vets relapses after (12?) weeks of antibiotcs. He recommends a much longer course.

Google "treating chronic mycoplasma" for more info.

Here's an article by Dr Nicholson that explains his theory on Gulf War Syndrome when it appears in soldier's families http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/home/eng/PhysicianReference3.pdf- it's been awhile since I've read it but I recall that he speculates that the vaccine itself is contaminated with mycoplasma and his work specifically focused on the strain called mycoplasma fermentans.

here is his treatment recommendation:

LLM- I forgot about that! mycoplasmas are a very well known contaminate in labs, because they are so common, so small, and difficult to detect.

That article is a very good summary - basically for all of us, not just myco folks- and so much more informative that my summary "it messes up the immune system" ! Thanks for posting it.

The scarey part about mycoplasma (as with strep) is that kids can be totally asymptomatic and have it. Our daughter had symptoms all spring and we couldn't figure out why they weren't going away. We had another blood draw done in May and her mycoplastma titers were 727 (the normal range is between 0 and 90). She is on her third month of azithromycin and we go back in for follow-up bloodwork the beginning of September. In our extensive testing in May, we also discovered that her glutamate level was high, zinc was low, and CoQ10 was low. She's on GABA to reduce the glutamate, zinc, and CoQ10. We've seen amazing improvement since adding all of the supplements to the azith.

I sent dr niclolson an email and he sent one back with 3 papers for me to read that he felt would be pertinent to mycoP and PANDAS. He wrote in the email that he thinks at least 25% of PANDAS cases have co-infections.

Both my son and dh are on Procalm that contains GABA and probiotics together. They take 3 at night. My dh loves it because it makes him feel so much better.

My ds14 goes to a ND and treatment for mico has been using a nebulizer with iodine and now liquid garlic every night. Will be on it the rest of treatment to get rid of mico and to keep lungs healthy. Lungs are tons better than beginning of treatment and has not had and any lung issues with colds etc.
