daughter had bounding and fast heartrate yesterday with dizziness and near passing out :( sitting down, calming down, drinking water --- nothing helped OH it was awful for her.

took her to ED and her heart rate just lying there was 130's-158!!! You could just feel it bounding out of her chest and it lasted for about 6 hours :( Her blood pressure was fine, her urinalysis did not show dehydration as Dr was of course thinking...

Now of course I know anxiety can increase heartrate..

This was different...

And she had been having more and more episodes of this over the last week or so just out of the blue - rapid bounding pulse...

SOOO anyone else have this on Zithromax?

Cardiology consult July 12th for echocardiogram and probably an event monitor to wear for a week...

Any other advice?

My oldest son DS9 had racing heart episodes 3 times in the past 2 years all episodes accompanied PANDAS exacberations. He had to go to emergency room where EKG did show fast irregular heartbeat which later became regular again and checked out fine and was also checked out fine by ped cardiologist at followup appointments.

I think it was strep going after the heart or the symphatic response to antibodies from the PANDAS resulting in mild panic attack. He was on Zithro for 2 of the episodes and last time it happened he was on Penn VK.

No drs' had any answers and like I said diagnostic tests after the episodes checked out fine.

Sorry I wish I had more answers and I really wish Dr's had more answers I know it is scary but he is fine now.

Sending healing wishes for your daughter.

Lyme can cause tachycardia. DS16 has had it repeatedly, and as we treat the lyme (in addition to the strep and everything else), the episodes of tachycardia are getting less often.

This is timely...my daughter (8) has been on zithromax for the past month or so and has been having lots of dizziness and just today fainted while in summer school - she had a full belly and I don't think she was dehydrated. She's already anxious like crazy and now this has just pushed it further over the edge. :( She was in drama class and standing up practicing her lines...so it could be anxiousness from that, but I'm not sure.

Azithromycin is one of the drugs used to treat some lyme and co-infections (DS took it for bartonella and lyme until he had a major allergic reaction.) She may be herxing, which may be further indication that she has lyme, and again lyme can cause tachycardia. I don't want to be-labor the point, but many parents have found that their children had other infections, such as strep/staph, etc, plus turned out to have lyme, which is a clinical dx (not always lab, because the lab tests are quite inaccurate.)

DS is a good case in point. The only reason we decided to test him and the whole family for lyme (we were positive it was only strep), was because we were have a battle for IVIG with insurance, and I had to do SOMETHING while we waited. So, we went to an LLMD. Everyone turned out to have it, and DS even had the bartonella stretch mark rash that we didn't know was anything more than stretch marks. He only had 1 IgG band positive on the WB. After about 6 months of tx, he was not getting better, and I had almost decided that it was not lyme after-all, until all of a sudden his spleen enlarged, liver enzymes jumped, and ASO jumped. He was put on IV abx, and the stretch marks suddenly started fading dramatically! That's when we knew there was no question.

I would definitely ask your dr about the azith, but please keep an open mind to the possibility of lyme. More and more parents on this forum are finding that their children are turning out to also have lyme, which definitely affects the immune system, the nervous system, etc, and so their children have lyme, strep, staph, viruses, etc., etc. And, until all infections are identified and treated, these children will not be able to get better.

Again, she may be herxing if the azith is actually treating lyme, and that could be causing the tachycardia.

Zithromaxmay cause ventricular tachycardia (serious problem with abnormal, rapid heart rate that originates in the "ventricle"/large chamber of the heart) (rare).

This drug may also cause the following symptoms that are related to ventricular tachycardia:

• Irregular/abnormal heart rate. Reported with similar types of drugs

• QT prolongation. Reported with similar types of drugs

• Repolerization abnormalities

• Torsade de pointes. Reported with similar types of drugs

• Heart palpitations (rare)

and

Side Effects to Watch

Watch closely for the following side effects and notify your physician immediately should any of these develop:

•Abnormal heart rate, fluttering in the chest, weakness, faintness, dizziness or loss of consciousness (signs of a serious condition called "torsade de pointe or QT prolongation" in which irregular heartbeats occur)

•Abnormal bruising or signs of bleeding such as bleeding from the gums, nose, digestive tract, vagina (females), faintness, dizziness, loss of consciousness, or rash (signs of problems with blood clot formation)

could alsobe a drug interaction.

I found an interaction with

zith and the ingredient in mucinex, and robitussin etc
